Let us know how it works out. I am looking for a Quality Telephoto zoom to replace my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lense. I would like something with a little more reach.

That can be done several ways. I am still trying to decide Canon L series or Sigma lens.

The lens I have is good but could be a little bit sharper and I have a hard time with it focusing on a bird in flight.

Why do people post about stuff they are buying?

Most of us photographers love getting new equipment to expand the joys of photography. I for one love hearing about someone getting a new item as I know how it feels. Every time I save enough for new equipment it is like Christmas all over again.

After 2 years of saving $ and finally deciding which lens would best suit my needs, I ordered a new Canon 100-400LII on Friday and it's on the truck to be delivered today!! I'm very excited!! When I first started saving for a lens, I was sure it would be the 70-200 f/2.8LII, but after getting a great refurb deal on the 24-105, I started wondering if I'd be happy with only another 95mm in reach. Then, the new 100-400 came out... I still had to decide which I needed/wanted more - speed or reach. Since I shoot more outside, I went with reach. I also reached out to a fellow UHH forum member for his advice, and coupled with reading all of the various threads here, I feel I made the wisest decision for me. I'd still love that 70-200 some day, buy maybe version I. Thank you, everyone, for posting your various questions and concerns about different lenses. I read them all, and it really helped my thinking process! :)

You will not be disappointed, it's a brilliant lens: though I am part exchanging all my Canon stuff for Olympus tomorrow I will probably miss it. I also have the Canon 300mm f2.8L IS, which has stunning performance, but I used the 100- 400mm more due to the weight saving. I never thought I was losing anything worth mentioning in image quality as I only view my photos electronically. It's ability to focus closer than any other equivalent lens is a real bonus. I sometimes used it for insect work when I could not get close enough to use my 100mm macro.

I have been fortunate to own both the Sigma 120 - 400mm and the Canon 100 - 400 L IS 11 and have to say I found the Canon to be the better lens. In fact, I think it is a brilliant lens: Tony and Chelsea Northrup do a pretty good review of the Canon against the Sigma and Tamron 150 - 600mm lenses on You Tube.

I have had mine for a few months now, and am very pleased with it! I think that you will be very happy with it. I also have the 1.4x III extender and it works well with it, used on both the 7DMKII and the 5DMKIII.

I'll give you the short response, Jim Bob. Whereas I feel genuinely happy and excited for folks who share their excitement in adding to their camera gear, I realize there are some people out there who are of a different nature. I shared my post because I wanted folks on this forum to know that their postings have really helped me in making my decision. It's good to read why people are pleased with their new lenses and cameras, and good to read how they are using their gear. It helps in making an informed decision on certain things. It's not an "in your face, I got a new lens" type of posting!!!!

Thank you, rmorrison! I've admired some of Regis' photos of the bald eagles using that combo. It's next on my wish list! Might have enough saved by next fall. :)

And you are so close to wintering eagles in NW Illinois that you will have many great opportunities for great shots. Good Luck.

I have both lenses, the EF 100-400L II and the Sigma 150-600 S. The Canon is excellent for hand held photography because of its weight, the Sigma may give you more reach but it is heavy and difficult at best for hand held photography.

The Sigma is very well built and has very good image quality for a $2000 lens. The Canon is, well, its an L series lens, need I say more.

There's also the Sigma's little brother, the 150-600 C which is about $1000 less than the S. It is no where's near as rugged as the S, it's primarily plastic where the S is metal, has good image quality though not as good as the S, even though C owners say it is as good as the S, it isn't, but it's close. The C is a little smaller and much lighter and an excellent lens for $1000.

Is the S worth twice as much as the C? If you go on photo safari in less than ideal environments and want a lens that will stand up to the potential abuse, the S is well worth the extra cost, and still less expensive than the Canon, although it's not a Canon L series lens.
