Just got back from Yellowstone and did not get "tack sharp" pictures of the wolf pack we saw 350 yards away. What lens would I need to get better pictures and where could I rent a lens someplace close to Yellowstone in January? I have a Canon 60D with a Sigma 120-400 lens. Yes, the lens was on a tripod.

Send a PM to MTShooter. He is a member of the Hog, has a camera shop in Montana and rents equipment to people visiting Yellowstone. He is very knowledgeable and totally reliable in his dealings. He can provide you with whatever you need, plus tips on shooting in Yellowstone.

Edit: Camera Cottage is his shop.

Most folks will have a rental lens delivered to a local address. Rental cos. will use FedEx or UPS to ship to a motel, etc. Renting a lens isn't going to help achieve "tack sharp" no matter the focal length. That is something that shutter speed and/or a tripod is going to address. Other than this problem, how was the rest of your trip? You survived the weather, that deserves a T-shirt at least. Out of curiosity, where did you stay?

Nanc, you're trying to shoot something the size of a dog at a 1/4 mile??
NO lens that costs less than a house will get that shot, no matter how many lenses you rent!!
Well, maybe if you're using a Canon 5ds you'd have a chance!! But you won't find one of those in Montana!!!!!!!

Is it true that MT Shooter bought it for use as a rental? 8-)

don't know if this will help, but I saw a guy at Yellowstone photographing a bear at about a quarter mile out with a telescope connected to a point and shoot camera, you would need to do some research.

This is what I was thinking.

Just buy a postcard with a wolf on it and have a hot chocolate at the lodge and get warm.

LensRentals.com rents the Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 lens for Canon mount. I've rented from them several times. They clean all items when they come back from being rented (even sensors) and include a pre-paid return shipping label to make returns easy. Like UHH members have already said though, 350 yards is too far away for any camera lens.

IMHO, you are beating a dead horse with the 60D - since it has NO micro focus adjust capabilities. Your best shot using the 60D is a Sigma Sport lens 150-600mm using the dock feature to fine tune the focus. 70D HAS micro focus adjust available for all lenses.

I totally agree, at that distance even 600mm won't help. I shot this swan at 138 yards with my D810 and Sigma Sport 150-600, and cropped it very close to 1:1. No tripod.

ISO 200, 600 mm, f/6.3, 1/640 sec.

We were in Yellowstone (Lamar Valley) for 4 days. A pack of 6 wolves were feasting on a recent kill. (a bull elk). They were in constant competition with ravens and magpies. We stay in a motel in Gardner, MT and drive into the park. A tremendous trip and great weather!! We drove there from north GA.

Lens Rentals.
Get the superior 100-400 mII. Tack sharp, hyperfast focus and very rugged.
