Cannot find anything about release priority.... what would it be under in manual?

Custom setting a2 on D800.

If you use pdf manual or Nikon's free manual app you can search "release priority".

Please, play nice. May have covered light assist, so possible photo subject did not see.

Was dry run, i should be able to take photos in very low light situations. But with it on manual, high ISO, on tipod, still ran into wall....help?

Please make sure the camera is set to "Release Priority". I believe that condition applies to ALL types of focus, including manual. Also, the "focus confirmation" light functions in manual focus, at least in my models. If you don't know how to select "Release Priority", try the index in your camera manual, check on-line, or call Nikon Tech Support. As a sports shooter, I've used "Release Priority" since the F5. I may get a couple of out-of-focus shots in a series, but focus will "lock on" very quickly. On many bodies, you can set "Release Priority" for "Continuous Focus" and "Focus Priority" for "Single Focus" which is the normal settings for my style and type of work. YMMV! (Your Mileage May Vary). Hopefully this information is of some help. Best of luck.

That was my next guess.
Tough situation, focusing in low light.
I use back button focusing myself.

It works great for me, I was kind of afraid I may have caused some confusion by suggesting it though. However it does take some getting use to.

I was a Nikon film guy and when the digital SLRs came out, I bought two Nikon DSLR bodies. They took great pictures, but I went to Canon because there were occasions when the camera just would not take a picture, just what you describe and I was not doing anything wrong. I missed some great pictures and made the switch to Canon. I have never had that problem with Canon bodies. I am not seeking to add to the Canon/Nikon debate as they both, and others, make great cameras.

You actually were doing something wrong. Just like your Canons, Nikons will take out of focus pictures if that is what you want. All you had to do was change the default focus-priority setting to release priority.

So it looks like the joke was on you.

I hope you bothered to read the manuals for the Canons.

Go to the custom settings menu on your D600 > autofocus> a1 AF-C priority selection > Release. Also, change a2 AF-S priority selection to release. It's all on page 221 of your D600 manual

Most Nikons have a focus assist light that comes on in low light situation. Look in your manual. You'll likely find the control. It should be on the D600. If you just change to release mode you may just get a bunch of out of focus picture especially if you've switched to manual focus. The focus dot still tells you when you're in focus even on manual. The assist light will likely fix your problem

Funny how you think it arrogant to have a different opinion. There is nothing arrogant about having an opinion. I simply believe it better to manually focus, rather than having the camera take an out of focus image.

It's arrogant to think you have the only valid opinion!

That's the first thing I do when I get a new camera. Then I set it so it won't click the shutter if there is no SD card.

1. my sony has a af/mf switch on the camera body, and my lens has a af/mf switch as well. only one controls the mf/af of the shot (forget which one). see if you have more than 1 switch that controls af/mf
2. my sony also has infocus light. It can show edges that are infocus (red fringe) and also has a green square that lights up when center is in focus. works for both af and mf

Are you saying that they both don't have to be set the same??

Not really. You have to believe it is the best opinion, otherwise you wouldn't hold it! We are so damned Politically correct these days, nobody is willing to say, "You're wrong, and I'm right!".

Ok so if it won't take a photo while in manual focus, you may have a different problem. Did you try a Nikor lens as suggested?

I don't think lens will stops you to trip the shutter!
Just check your setting to make sure it's on "Shutter Priority" not "Focus Priority". Think about this, you still can operated the shutter without the lens mounted!

For the D600; in the custom settings menu both A1 and A2 should be set to release.

Isn't that the truth! Even when all the facts are are your side, PC insists that you play nice and give the other side the benefit of the doubt.
