Breed dogs - I wish I would not have seen this. I have a big long speech but it seldom goes anywhere. To keep it simple, and than I will go away; do you have any idea of the number of dogs that are neglected, abused and put down each and every day because of over popualtion, and the very best intentions?

Buddha, take your soap box somewhere else. The person asked a question about cameras. I am sure there is a blog concerning pet breeding and stray animals where you can vent.

I am partial to Nikons, but there are a good number of practical cameras for your needs. Nikon point & shoots are pretty good. The P series gets good reviews from users.

Also, many people like the Fuji Film S series. They have good optics and great color rendering. You can find them on Ebay in the neighborhood of $100 to $200 dollars, used. An S1500 is a nice camera. Not the very latest but a good everyday camera.

The best way to make a decision is go to where cameras are sold, and see how you like the feel and features of any particular camera. Beware the salesmen. They like to sell cameras that offer the best profit margin for the dealer and not necessarily the camera that will best fit your needs.

Hi Chris.
It would help us you better if you could give us a budget. I shot Nikon. I have 3 cameras that I fool around with at different times and love all three for what I use them for. 1)Nikon D300s with a boat load of lenses. I put insurance on it for $48,000. It is my work horse when I want/ need a good picture. 2) Nikon P7100. This is a bridge camera. It is a point and shoot, but can go full manual. I use it when I don't want to carry all the gear and when we are just going out goofing and I want to go light. It will do about 80% of what the D300s does. 3) P500. This is my play camera. I just grab it and go play. It has a lenses that will go out to 800+. It takes good pictures.
So you see, it can go from $48,000 down to 500. All take great shots, But I depends on the light. The smaller cameras can not compete when the light is bad. And good glass is the key.

If you want to grow into a camera I would go with dslr either Canon or Nikon. the entry level cameras are why ahead of the Pro models of 6 yrs ago. I think that if you get the 18-145 kit lens you will do fine. Shoot 85mm and above so you don't distorote. You may want to get a flash if not get a diffuser for the flash on your camera so the eys will look right. Sorry your first post was from that nut. - Dave

Welcome to UHH. I'm glad that someone breeds pugs because we have three, and we love them. I'm sure bull dogs can be just as lovable.

You wanted to know something about a camera, didn't you. I see you're leaning toward Canon - good camera. As you progress in photography, you'll see that cameras come and go, but lenses are forever. You could buy a great camera for $6,000, but in a few years, there would be a better one.

I have a Nikon D7000, which is a very good camera, but Nikon makes better, much more expensive models. When the D7100 comes out, I'll probably get that, but I'll keep my lenses. Get a reasonable camera, but invest in lenses. A good lens takes a better picture than a good camera.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the Hog! Stick around, you will find people here that are absolutely brilliant. And then there is me who is not.
I have a Nikon P3100 (P/S) that is the biggist piece of crap I ever had the displeasure shooting with. The on/off switch sticks. When I get to storage and find them I will post my pics of the moon which were shot with an Olympus 3mp point and shoot. I had a Kodak P/S that shot lovely picks as well, now I own a Nikon D3100 and I LOVE it. That camera has a bit of a learning curve if you have never shot DSLR manual before, you could also use it as a P/S. One day I hope to get good enough to deserve purchasing something better, but for now, since I am a newbie it shall do.
I cannot say one way or another about Canon, but I know those that own them, love them.
When you decide and take pictures of your pups, post them! I know there are lots of folks here that would LOVE to see them! Good luck!

I would echo the advice to go to a good camera store and try out the different brands and models. Then you can make an informed decision about which one feels best to you.

Knightmarian you are a revelation. All you hear from people who own cameras that theirs are the best thing since sliced bread. That you have one that is a 'piece of crap' is a breath of fresh air. (how many cliches can I get in this?)
Most cameras are decent these days it's just which one feels best for you within the budget you have - which is what everyone else has already said, so I will shut up now.

Hi Chris, br Welcome to the Hog! Stick around, you... (show quote)

Don't have to wait until you get good enough. Go out right now and get something real nice. If I had to wait I would still be using chalk on sidewalk.

Would that be with Nikon chalk or Canon chalk? If you spend $1,000's on a sidewalk, there will be a better one in a year or two. Buy the best chalk and you will use it for many years.

My first camera was a nikon d50, and I haven't put it down yet. I don't own another camera because I use my nikon for everything i need it to do. In my opinion it is a great starting camera because the functions are less complicated and it gives you an idea of what your getting into. Maybe in a year or two I'll buy a beter camera. Hope you fins the one that offers everything you are looking for

I don't know why Nikon decided to use both D and P and the same numbers for totally different cameras. I've seen "P7100" several times, and I thought they were referring to the new "D7100."
