Gyula Halász, "Brassaī" (1898-1984), an Hungarian photographer born in Brasov, Rumania, adopted the Hungarian spelling of his birthplace as his pseudonym. Instructed in photography by Andres Kertesz, another Hungarian photographer of renown in the street genre, he spent most of his adult life in Paris, whence the majority of his works fit easily into the traditional street genre. He is recognized particularly for his penchant for nocturnal scenes with available light. His images not infrequently depict some of the more "seamy" aspects of the Paris night scene.
