Interesting but, if the gourmet tasters can't tell the difference and the oil you bought is safe, does it really matter if it's not 100% virgin. Ignorance is bliss. :) :) :)

What should I care what the olives do in the still dark night.

Ahhh they say this about lipstick on a pig, and they used to say this about Gin... back when made in a bathtub. :) Ignoring the people who went blind because they used wood.

If it says Virgin Olive oil and it isn't, they are stealing, they should be treated as such.

I did have a caveat in there 'it's safe". If it's actually 2nd hand Rose but tastes right and gets the job done what the heck, there are much more important things in life to deal with or to put it simply, "it's not a fight worth choosing"

A recent 60 Minutes on fake olive oil has expert tasters working for the Italian government able to detect virgin oil from adulterated.

Seems I have more interest in this forum than olive oil as I only read the linked article and chose to not pursue it further. :) In that article it said that gourmet tasters couldn't tell the difference.

There is much food adulteration and mis-labeling. There are growing numbers of class action lawsuits in response. My recent favorite was Starkist Tuna getting sued for having as little as 3 oz of tuna in the 5.5 oz can.

Because you pay a premium for 100% Virgin Olive Oil, and should get what you pay for, especially if you use olive oil instead of vegetable or animal fat based oils, for health reasons. Extra Virgin olive oil also makes the best tasting salads. I usually buy Greek or Spanish olive oils as I've found them to be more "olivey" than the Italian olive oils. Now I know why the Italian oils were failing the taste and smell test.

There's a difference between "gourmet tasters" and trained experts working for the Italian authorities to detect adulterated so-called virgin olive oil. It *can* be detected and a number of arrests have resulted from the evidence supplied by the official tasters.

Nope, I think buying a product whose contents do not match the label is a HUGE great big- very important deal, and I'll bet you do too, if you thought where it might lead. The olive oil isn't quite as disturbing, but getting away with it is... .

Because if dog meat was packaged as pork... then you'd be fine with it because it lives up to your standards. It not what it says, but its safe. In China they added chemicals to milk so fool testers by raising the level of protein measured in it... Or the honey from China, where there is no honey in it at all! How about Dog treats from China, that kill your dog... See the people of China won't buy baby formula, or any milk if its label says made in China, because they know they can't trust it, if it says Made in US ( Or other western countries with "laws" ).. they know they can. Why they are trying to get that rule changed to not add it. Did you know that North American chicken is to be slaughtered here, then shipped over to China to be processed, then shipped back. But the fact that it was in China is to be REMOVED from the label.

You feel good about that?

Pretty simple, if the contents of a product do no match the ingredients on the label- whether safe or not... you should pay heavily and punitively to prevent or dissuade you from doing it again and depending on the crime, maybe go to jail for it. You should be able to trust the label- or you will be sorry sooner or later. And they should have to declare that a product was processed in China- because I won't buy it... all because of the truth of the label.

Here- its a big issue: YOu should be able to know what and where a product comes from:
