How do I get my em-1 to name files by consecutive numbering. On page 238 of David Busch's Oly book he says go to Custom H:/record/erase/filename and choose Auto. I've done this and every time I download & start a new shoot the darn thing starts from number 1 again. My download procedure is card-reader to iMac; run another back up & be sure I've got em and format the card in the camera. Is it an Oly thing that it can't remember what number it was on and starts over? I don't really like to just erase the photos, I'd rather format. I've done this with lots of cameras and never had a problem. Is this a typical Oly thing or have I had a camera problem since day one of ownership?. Thanks for your help. Oh Ya, I've done dumb things before, so clue me in if I've done another one.
I believe it may be the card formatting step that re-starts the number sequence at "0" again. Not sure if there is a way around this, but fortunately there are a growing number of M4/3 enthusiasts here on the UHH forum who may be able to ride to your rescue.
Lynn - Sorry you haven't received any more responses to your perfectly reasonable question. You might try sending your question as a UHH Private Message to any of the following three members, all of whom are Olympus users: Cdouthitt, Morning Star or RichardTaylor. I happen to be a former Illinois resident and lived in a variety of cities in the Chicago suburban area - was just trying to be helpful to a fellow Illinoisan.
No you can do this
Off the top of my head I don't r ember which menu you have you use.
Later today I will double check and get back to you
First did you read the Olympus manual. I don't trust David Busch books on the EM-5 book I found misinformation. You can call Olympus Tech support. They are very good and the phone number is in the manual.

Hi Lynn L,
I have an EM10, if you format the card in the camera the numbering starts all over again, I personally don't find this a problem as I organise my photos by date and location.
The only suggestion I would make is not to "Format" your card go for the "All erase" option instead this should continue the numbering from the previous one.
I am assuming that the EM1 has the same menu system !!
Cheers,
John.
When you down load your photographs they can be renamed and numbered. Everyone I've read says format your cards.

As well as David Busch's book, did you check the manual that came with your camera? I don't know if the information is different... but:
If not, go to page 99:
File Name:
{Auto}: Even when a new card is inserted, the file numbers are retained from the previous card. File numbering continues from the last number used or from the highest number available on the card.
{Reset}: When you insert a new card, the folder numbers starts at 100 and the file name starts at 0001. If a card
containing images is inserted, the file numbers start at the
number following the highest file number on the card.
Edit Filename Choose how image files are named by editing the portion of
the filename highlighted below in gray.
sRGB: Pmdd0000.jpg Pmdd
AdobeRGB: _mdd0000.jpg mdd
NOTE: You will need to check the manual for these "gray" parts - I can't reproduce them here.
NOTE: The page may be different, I have the newest manual, for firmware update 4.0 - if you still have an older manual, the page may have changed, the information will be the same.
Just check the index under Filename.

Saw this recently on DPR, it may help
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57015648If not, you could ask there and probably get help, lots more of "us" there than here. I don't worry with it since I order my images by date and LR puts them in perfect order for me, but I can see it would be annoying if you catalog your images using those numbers.
The E-M1 number system is "month-day-sequence #" and it resets it's numbers when the date changes. So if it's Wednesday, it starts counting at 1, for example, the number would be 0203001 and so on. Then if you go out the next day, Thursday, the date has changed and the camera starts at 1 again or to be more precise 0204001. To get around this, I use Bridge to change the numbers, and I'm sure that there is other software that will let you do this. I developed my own numbering system since I have more than one camera, and I'm sure others have had to do this, as well, to avoid confusion. Here's what I'm using: year-month-day-sequence #-camera, which looks like this "16_02_03_0001_EM1.jpg".

Arrow down to settings ( the icon for gears)
Move over to custom menu and go to record/erase ( second page)
Hit set and then go to file name and place on auto

Thank you Morning Star, and everyone else. I really appreciate all of you helping me solve my problem. I did set the camera to "Auto", and my assumption is that it should retain the last number used and continue from there; however, this camera can't seem to remember the last number. I think I may have a sick em-1 here. I've contacted Olympus and should have a response form them in a day or two. My first shot for a solution was a phone call to Olympus customer service for OMD cameras. Unfortunately the guy I talked to didn't really speak English; from there he either didn't understand the problem or he knew very little about how the em-1 worked. It was a very sad experience as far as customer service SHOULD go. I wonder if the "remembering number" thing is in firmware or uses a hidden back up battery inside the camera. Thanks again to everyone. I now have several things to try and hopefully we will solve the problem.
Hm interesting as mine does exactly what you need. As at one time it was set differently (and that was some time ago and don't remember what the setting was at that time)

Thanks photocat. I've did this procedure a few days ago, went out & shot, downloaded, went out a couple days later & shot 5 or 6 images, and walla, it started from 1 again.
Please let us know what Olympus says
Next time I am at my dealers I will double check with them as well
