Maybe take a day trip up to the Hudson Valley or the Catskills. Beautiful area with lots of history.

if the pedestrian walkway is still open on the 59th St Bridge (that's what most people call the Queensboro Bridge.,.or is it the Ed Koch Bridge now?) you'll get spectacular views of Manhattan and to get the best nighttime views you can take. PATH train to Jersey City or Hoboken on the Jersey side of the Hudson River.
The Chrysler Bldg is a must as is Grand Central Station right across the street.

I for 1 don't care what the new names are I still call them by their real names' It will always be the interborough (Jackie Robinson) parkway. 6 av will ever be Avenue of the Americas. It's called the Triborough Bridge (not the RFK) and it will always be the 59 st, Bridge. BTW it's Grand Central Terminal, not grand central station.

depends on your point of view, me I'm not so impressed with Brooklyn, had to work there, prefer Manhattan and Staten Island.

Agree! There's at least one terrific museum on Staten Island.

Just ALWAYS have your camera ready! I prefer a prime wide angle for most shots in NYC. (I normally use a 25mm but 28 would also be good). One day in late December there was a walking christmas tree, complete with lights! You NEVER know what interesting things will show up!

If you want to see interesting things, Take the Staten Island ferry at around 12 midnight, 1AM when the bars in the village start letting out. VERY INTERESTING.

My favorite three things to see with great views of the harbor and the NYC skyline:
1. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. It's free. Carefully note the lane marked with a bicycle icon and stay out of it, or you risk being run into by some speed demon bike rider.
2. Brooklyn Heights Promenade. About a half mile from the Brooklyn Bridge. A favorite spot for fashion photographers to shoot models with the NYC skyline behind them. It starts at the foot of Montague St and is about a half mile long. If you continue on the sidewalk a block past the north end of the promenade, a steep hill will take you down to the Brooklyn Harbor.
3. The Staten Island Ferry. A free half hour ride to Staten Island. Great views of the skyline and harbor from the water.

So me and my wife will celebrate her 40th birthday in New York this September. We will stay for a week.
It is our first time there so I was wondering if there are any must see places(for photography). Not talking about all the obvious places, such as the Statue, Empire state building, Central Park and so on.
Maybe a stupid question but I really want to get the most out of our trip and my photography there :)

Thank you so much in advance.

I would suggest getting into some of the historic buildings, esp the churches. There is always St. Patricks but there is also an Episcopal church just down the street (sorry, don't remember the name) with exceptional architecture including a massive pipe organ. Keep your eyes open for all the local fruitcakes walking around (eg. photo 1) and there are always the dioramas in the Natural History Museum (eg. photo 2). Have fun.

Reply: Unless you want to go to Liberty Island the best view of the Statue itself is from the free Staten Island Ferry. Good shots available of Manhattan Skyline, Verazzano Bridge, and Brooklyn Skyline and any ships that might be in port in New Jersey or Brooklyn.
