Now THAT'S what I needed to hear. Thanks snowbear. Although, my 18-55mm does AF... so what do you mean by the 3100 not having an autofocus motor? Or are you just saying the lens won't AF unless I have the AF-S lens? So maybe I need a different zoom. I just found my focus meter in my viewfinder! That will help a ton. I had one on my Nikon FE but didn't see it on the D3100. Sheesh! This gettin' older thing is tough. <Laf'n>

A lot of cameras have the motor in the camera itself, the D3100 does not.

In the D3100 the motor is in the lens, which is why that lens will not auto focus....it has no motor in the lens....but can be used in auto focus mode with a camera that has the motor built in.

Well shoot...that makes sense. Thanks Joyfullee.

Let me try to give this a shot. If you got good results with a 55mm lens you have to remember that it requires a little less light. A long lens (I have the same one. Came with my 5100.) requires more light so it's more difficult to get a faster shutter speed. So, here's the problem. The moon is constantly moving so you need a faster shutter speed.
Hope I answered this correctly.

Dont touch the shutter... use the timer. There are a lot of miles between here and the moon, a lot of stuff between the moon and your lens.... Just keep shooting.

Sorry I didn't go into detail - trying to multitask! Since I am a visual person, here's a shot of the "screw" in Nikon AF bodies and lenses. The body has a screwdriver type of thing (your's won't have it) and the lens has the screw head. The AF-S lenses do not have this little screw head.

You did NOT answer correctly. Nor did you read previous post with moon exposure settings, which have not changed since film was invented.

Now that you have found the answer to the problen with your exhisting lens I'll address your question on which zoom lens to purchase. I have a D3100 and bought the Nikon 18-200 zoom lens when I got my camera. If I were you and this is just my opinion I would take the kit lenes you got with the camera and trade them in for the Tameron 18-275 zoom. The camera shop where I deal has a 30 day return policy so you can buy a camera or lens, use it for 30 days and return it if you don't like it. I found the Tameron lens to outperform the Nikon plus the Nikon had alot of sliping right out of the box which can be a pain and one of the main reasons I took it back. I've had the Tameron for about 9 months W/O any problems and I use the setup extensively. One nice thing about this lens is that you seldom have to change lenses which prevents dust particles from entering the inside of your camera or lens. It also has a vibration compension motor in the lens as someone mentioned and it works fantastic. The only other lens I carry is a Nikon 1.8 50mm fixed lens for low light situations and this can be purchased fairly cheap. Hope this will help.................
