So, here is the rest of my story ......as it relates to the Manfro #222 and #322 heads.

First shot shows how to use a lens without a tripod collar with the Manfro #222 ( 3265) - by putting a Manfro #234 on top using Manfro QR's.

Second shot shows how using a macro slider plate can be used for adjusting the balance on a large lens using the Manfro QR system on the #222 and not an Arca/Swiss.

Third shot shows how I use the same macro slider with a macro lens and a #234 to allow shooting macro verticals. Most macro lenses do not have tripod collars.

This is quite a set up. You obviously know what you are doing and you are very creative.

Here is the adapter that makes the Manfro QR receiver an Arca/Swiss ....

For use with the 150-600mm lens, I lean towards using the #322 head because of the lower profile.

I am meeting with a friend tomorrow who has the 150-600 and the #322 head and will will be experimenting and field testing - I will take some photos also.

Thanks for the input. It is a confusing subject for sure. I think I will probably get a regular head first and then look for a gimbal head later if I still feel the need. I play around with still life and close ups using smaller lenses which wouldn't work with the gimbal. I may contact Carter-I ordered the UHH pins from him-since I see a lot of good comments from people who got tripods and heads from him.

I am not quite understanding why 'smaller lens won't work with a gimbal. I use a 24mm on a D800E with a nest gimbal for milky way shots, works great. I liked the nest gimbal it's so easy to use I brought another. One is on a manfrotto 055/pro and the other on a nest 404. Nest gimbal for $298 at camera cottage, great price.

If you read the various posts, more than one person said the gimbal really only works with lenses that have collars. I have no experience with a gimbal so I really don't know.

A picture is worth a thousand words ?

Arc-standard QR plate mounted to bottom of camera. Then mounted to nest gimbal head. Works great.

So we tested the 150-600 Tamron with the #322 Manfro today - and while it works, I (we) much prefer the #222......(3265) - which surprised me in a way.

change to portrait and allow for crop if necessary. I do have a 80-400mm with the foot mount on the lens, so I can adjust that lens to the vertical.

Could you show us that set-up with a picture and how well does this shot balance. Will this also work with a shorter lens. The reason I ask is because I'm having a problem making this work with my gimbal with short lenses. Thanks

Here is the 80-400mm with foot. The arca-standard QR plate mounts to the foot on the lens as shown. I have the gimbal head loose on both adjustments and the lens set to 400mm, where I usually use it, balance is good. Even if I change to a shorter focal length I do lock the the two gimbal adjusters before I take a shot. Your problem with the short lenses ? If you are using a arca plate all I can think of is to check to make sure the plate is not mounted upside down.

My short lenses don't have a collar and with the Canon battery pack on the 7D MK II it doesn't balance all that well. Thanks for the pictures and your help.
