I have a rider on my state farm homeowners insurance on which I can list individual photo items. It is reasonably priced but is not available if you are using the equipment to make money. I have not had to use it often, but have had a few major claims that really add up.

Of course there are companies that supply insurance to media people:

I use Travelers through USAA.

Mine is equipment combined with liability and for tons of gear and a few million in liability it is around $600/yr. Covers loss of software, damage to rental sites or rental gear, etc.

Homeowners insurance covers cameras, lenses and other equipment for non-professionals. Make sure to get full replacement insurance. That covers accidents, theft, loss, and just about anything that could happen to a camera. No pro-rating. The cost is very reasonable. My insurance costs $48.00/year to cover $14000.00 of equipment. If you are in business it would listed and insured through the business.

Keep in mind, even if you buy the rider from your home insurance company, if you make a claim it will fall on your home owners policy. In turn, could substantially increase your premium.

You are correct on this, I know somebody who was redlined for 5 years because of a claim they filed for a D700 and 70-200 stolen from their sun porch.

I am currently insured by a company that carries photo equip insurance
but it is not their bread and butter. So I'm thinking that there must be
insurance companies that do take photo equip much more seriously
and am sure that many of you serious photographers are insured by
one that you are happy with because to them (company) it is their
main business. I want to know of one or more that you have as your
protector of your photo equip that you cannot financially replace.
Please give some contact info ( phone or email address).
Thanks,

Ted, here is all you need to know about photo gear insurance, as well as theft deterrents, tracking if stolen, etc. Homeowners "can" work, but the best policies include breakage, theft, loss of use, etc. but are costly.

edazz; good question. I don't have my homeowners ins. with State Farm(but have car ins, with them) and, living in a rural area I have farm mutual that I won't give up as they have been great in the past and the cost is very competitive. So, will State Farm cover only camera equipment and/or guns? Years ago I had a laptop insured with State Farm on a stand-alone policy. Cost: $30 a year for #3,500 of coverage.

Your homeowner's policy will not cover high end photography gear. You'll need a separate rider from your current insurance carrier. I use State Farm. In order to obtain a policy I had to provide a complete list with serial numbers for each item and the original purchase invoice. I'm also required to edit the list if I sell or acquire new items that need to be insured. The rider is a full replacement policy with a reasonable deductible.

The annual premium cost is not inexpensive, but frankly, if I had even a small portion of the gear stolen the annual premium would seem insignificant.

I too have State Farm and instead of a rider on my Home Owner's Policy, I chose to get a Personal Articles Policy separately from my Home Owner's and it has full coverage with no deductible for losses and breakages - world wide.

I saw that listed on their website. Could you tell us how much it costs?

That sounds very reasonable. Which insurance company do you use?
