I think, What is Photography, would have been a better title, but that's my opinion.

I think we are talking about 2 different things; to me a photograph is a particular capture of a " now " , whereas Photography is the medium we use to capture that " now ".

Boy, can I identify with this. When I first started in Photography I lost so many good opportunities by not waiting for the right light, not turning back on the roadway to capture an idyllic scene, not wanting to get up early for that special shot, etc. Lost and gone forever. I might be able to capture the same scene but not the same mood. Lessons learned.

THANK YOU, Yooper 2 for a positive understanding of my writing. I have to say and I'm sure you have said this and also others as well.

You'll be driving along with others and someone will say, "OH, THAT WOULD BE A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO". But, you did not stop!

Your beautiful photograph is lost forever. Of course you can go back their another time or maybe never. But the lighting, time of day, weather conditions won't be the same will it! You'll have a different feeling towards your photo . . . AP

"That would be a beautiful photo" is usually said by people who didn't bring a camera and I go out of my way to remind them of that.

In the past I have regretted not stopping for some scene that I thought was beautiful, but I have learned my lesson and now I turn the car around and life is better.

Your correct Travel wp! Our life span is shorter than our photos made. Lets all keep making wonderful beautiful photographs for others to enjoy! AP

That's correct, Manny Jay! But remember, you stopped a moment in time for a split second when you snapped the shutter on your camera. You cannot bring back that time again. AP

If i saw that photo offered for $1 at the local salvation army store i would consider it over priced.

An English magazine wrote: "it could be a long time before a photograph comes along that will top Gursky’s print. This image is a vibrant, beautiful and memorable – I should say unforgettable – contemporary twist on Germany’s famed genre and favourite theme: the romantic landscape, and man’s relationship with nature."

With wordsmithing like that, the magazine writer could sell a dog turd and someone would want to buy it.

Well, yesterday's tomorrow is today. :D

And tomorrow's yesterday is today.

Finally, today's yesterday IS Yesterday and today's tomorrow IS Tomorrow.

Remember we all live in linear time, second to second. We cannot go forward or back. The photo records one of those moments that are past as soon as it is taken. :-)

We are deep into philosophy.
You cannot see the same river twice, and all that. (except in a photograph)

An interesting thread.

That wording itself is a heaping plate of turds. One person's poop is another person's art. Flush twice, it's a long way to the museum.

Reading all of the postings here had me thinking back to 2012 - December Twelfth was approaching - and I was giving a "talk" about photography and what it meant to me and how it relates to others at the St. Louis Camera Club (over 100 years a continual operating organization). At the end of the lecture I gave out a "tag-line"....

"I hope that I have a camera in my hands when the "End of The World" happens..... I would Not Wish To Miss That Final Shot." = There were a few odd looks in the assembled members... And a Few that completely understood.

The after thought of this to me that I spoke of later was True to me. Of course NO ONE anywhere would ever EVER see this "Last Photograph" ... However, THAT was not the point... The POINT to me was that I DID get the Last Photograph in the history of mankind on this earth. And with that I could go in peace.

It takes a certain passion being a photographer, an artist, and someone who cares for what they do. I am very happy to be a small part of the UHH and the other members assembled herewith.

Thank You ALL for putting into words Your thoughts and feelings of what we do as Photographers.

Of course Joe Paich you have to have a camera too make a photograph. What was inportant in the asking - What is a photograph ?

Many missed a good answer. I got a very good response on my statment. You have to read the written words carefully.

Some mentioned Henri Cartier Bresson - The Dessive Moment!
Once again, you have to understand what that means when you look at a photigraph.

A photograph has to have something to say when you look at it. Most photographs here are FLOWERS AND BIRDS. "BIG DEAL!"

Do you think the photo Bob Jackson made in the tunnel of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald is a BIG deal ? You better believe it!

Try shooting film, you think digital is tought. THINK AGAIN! Everbody shoots digital, their all photographers. Just the fact you had to focus the lens manually would be toughter than you think.

Bob Jackson made only one shot. Study keeper photographs, and say to yourself, how on earth did he/she make that photo ? No extras to choose from. AP
