There could be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050

When I was a bicycle pedaling youngster back in the 40s, a little spending money could be had by picking up pop bottles. They were returned to a store and the reward made the effort worthwhile.
This approach to insuring a pretty good percentage of recycling worked then, so why not now???
We understand the concept of recycling scrap metal, so why not plastic? Put another way, the cost of not responsibly reclaiming plastic, in my mind, far exceeds the cost of not doing so.

I know many people who still think this is all a fake, sure hope the world figures this out soon.

People in England are now quite good at recycling household waste but more needs to be done by manufacturers in their packaging levels. It is always the same, the man in the street has to 'save the world' while big business can carry on doing anything that earns more money for themselves. I believe there are ways of collecting the islands of plastic in the sea, shredding and recycling it but Governments prefer not to spend our money in this sensible way or even to persuade those who cause the problem to contribute.

Few of us who opinionate about this topic know the reason that plastic is "better" than glass. First is the cost of transporation - glass weighs more, especially re-usable bottles that have to be robust to withstand the handling. That's why things that must be in glass are in thin bottles.

Which leads to the problem of breakage - glass does and plastic doesn't.

We're doomed, anyway, so why sweat it?

One reason why I worry about it is that lots of sea birds die in agony with plastic in their guts not to mention other wildlife that also mistake it for food, some of which gets into our food chain. Another worry is the question of why we, as intelligent beings, cannot reduce our waste and manage better what we do use. I do understand your comments on glass but I do not see it as an 'either/or' problem.

Great attitude, I'll tell my grandchildren to just go ahead and litter because we're all doomed!. Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future. All we can control is what we do on this planet. Some care and some don't. I've seen enough to know that selfish people will never care and its up to the rest of us to stop things like this. JMHO!

My apologies, I commonly forget that this is neither the "kindly hedgehog" nor the "humorous hedgehog." I'll try to remember in the future.

First off many of the world do not live near the ocean or it's beaches - what it takes to really see how bad it is in and along the ocean shores is to spend some time on the shore lines of the less populated areas where it does not get cleaned up regularly or at all.
Here is my experience with the plastic, glass and metal "STUFF" that I ran across while visiting and living on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on what is called the Mexican Riviera from 1985-2005

EVERY day there was new stuff washed up on the beach in front of the house - over a 5 year period we gathered bottles with markings on them from many countries, plastic bags mixed in with the coral reef to the point they out numbered the sea fans.
Just below Talum - the only Mayan settlement on the Coast is a gigantic coastal reserve - 50 home at the most for 100's of square miles - non on the beach - BUT_ the whole shore line at the top of where the waves come in it is like someone took a dump truck and dumped this line of plastic& glass in a path ABSOLUTELY all the way along the beach - we are talking 30 miles of trash the width of a 2 lane road. The only time it gets cleaned off is when a hurricane washes it further inland.
Now this is just a fraction of the worlds beaches - our North Pacific coast gets "STUFF" from ALL of the western Pacific countries - Philippines & Japan - Oh Russia too.
What I have seen is just the Stuff that gets to shore - the amount out there at sea is non-measurable.

A little side note - the wave action breaks up and grinds the glass away - the salt water eventually eats up the metal but the Plastic is there for almost an eternity.

Been there & learned to hate plastic.

Part of your reply is quite logical while the last part is quite moronic -Do you leave your picnic garbage along the road to & from or at some place other than in a trash bin ? How nice it must be for you to go out on one of your nice secluded desert roads and see the trash that people have dumped over the years and ad yours to it.

Proper disposal starts at home and proceeds where ever one travels- in many places our lakes and streams are as clogged with trash as the Oceans.

People with your mind set make me furious.
