I have the Sigma Contempory len,are the settings the same? I have been concidering getting the dock but was not sure it was worth it, so what I'm hearing most of you think it is?

If for no other reason than upgrading the firmware version on the lens. Consider what you paid for the lens and the price of the hub it is a good investment.

Yes, the settings are the same . The "cost" of using the dock is not only monetary ! - it will require dedication and testing ( your time and understanding) to maximize and optimize your results !

I realized the lens is more sensitive to distance because as I shot, I noticed birds that were closer were very sharp but birds at a distance were soft. So it was simply trial and error. My lens seems to tend to front focus so I kept pushing the focus back until I got sharp shots out to 100-125 yards. Past that I find its still a crap shoot. No...I have no short cut tips. Other than concentrate on one focal length at a time. But, for me, a lens-align at 100 yards wouldn't be too helpful.
Most of the time i shoot at 600mm. So I worried about that particular focal length first and foremost. Shorter lengths didn't seem to be too bad, so I haven't played with them much.

I rented this lens a year ago and noticed the same thing. At close distance and smaller focal lengths the focus was dead on . At 600 and longer distances I had a bad back focus. If I were to purchase it I'd definitely use the USB Dock and super tune it. I've used the dock on the 50art and the 18-35art and it made a huge difference in the performance of these lenses. I could only imagine what a difference it would make with a lens of this long of a focal distance.
Great pics by the way.
I imagine I should chime in here. I also have the dock and I've used it only for firmware updates and snooping at the adjustments. The lens is so good I don't want to screw something up. You know if you "fix" something long enough,......You end up really fudging it up. I have found mine to be spot on all the way out to 600 in my opinion. Although I am NOT a pro like so many of the more experienced shooters here. It does the job for me.
I found most of the BIF's I've shot to be sharp. My favorites are the FA-18's of the Blue Angels. Although they are a bit more predictable than their counterparts. It's still challenging to acquire them from a boat rolling on Lake Michigan at the Air and Water shows here.
I use a D750.
And yes, the numbers are quite big. Do remember that (for some reason) these Sigma settings is about half of the AF-Fine Tune you can do in the camera. So a -2 in camera setting would be -4 when you compensate in the lens.
I have found 3-4 other photographera that have published the setting in theis lenses, and the total spann of adjutment is about the same.
Someone might wonder if this is a sharp lens, and it is. I have had a Nikon 300/2.8 VR II for a couple of years, and at 500-600mm this is sharper! It does not match the "naked" 300, but my 300 and a 1.7 converter is less sharp than my Sigma. I have sold the 300/2.8, and I never thought I would do that...

I have the same settings, almost. I use C2 just to help me remember (second gear is faster than first :-) )
I like using C2 for faster!!! I have 6 lenses and they all have different settings such as active, panning, etc. Hard to remember which is what when you put the lens on so simplifying is always nice.

Really wonderful photos!!! Thanks for sharing them. Since most of the time when I put the Sigma lens on my body I am using the higher focal lengths, it makes perfect sense to check the 600 mm first at the various distances and then work back towards 150 if time and need permits. I am curious though, how accurate do I have to be with the distances. I would imagine better than a rough estimate but I don't need to hire a surveyor I assume!!!
This might be slightly off topic, but figured this was worth passing on: I talked to a Sigma technical rep about the 150-600(both) and using the TC1401, and adjusting with the dock. The lens has a separate storage table for adjustments done with the teleconverter-it will NOT overwrite any adjustments stored for just the lens.

I have stayed home for a week with a cold, and had time to adjust the two short distances, but 15 m and infinity has (for me) been trial and error.
Problem (with trial and error) is when a 25-50 m shot is out of focus, what do you adjust? 15 m or infinity, or both?
I am sure that doing it properly from the beginning is faster and more accurate. Wish I had done so...

Good info!! Thanks. The Sigma 1.4TC is my next GAS attack
Just wondering who has a good link to show how to use the dock for the Sigma 150-600. I would want to know exactly how to adjust before trying, the ones that have used the dock how difficult is it to adjust on a scale from 1-10? My other question, can you screw it up where it won't focus properly? I'm assuming you can always put it back to default.
Thanks for any advice for someone that has never tried the dock.
There are a few on uTube such as this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZU1BffL6-E to look at and yes you can always undue the changes you make.
