Is the D40 is still working well for you? What other lenses do you have? Do you have a good tripod or external flash?

IMHO I'd keep it and put the money spent on the 3100 towards an additional high quality lens or decent tripod and external flash.

As far as compositions, there are several guidelines: rule of thirds, triangles, golden mean, diagonals, repetition of theme, leading lines. A quick look through Amazon or a bookstore in the art section should give you a good starting point.

I think, and I suspect that Snowbear would agree, that you have answered your own question. If you are happy stay with it. Why spend money to risk disappointment. By the way Snowbear what part of Maryland are you from? I have daughter that just moved from Frederick. Beautiful country up there:-)

I really like the D40, I got one for my wife because it is so much lighter than most of my other Nikons. I would suggest you buy an external flash for it. Your indoor pictures will show great improvement with a better flash. Speedlight SB-400 is only about $125, SB-600 around $200. The 18-55 lens is a fine lens, lightweight but takes great photos. If you get a telephoto lens, I suggest the Nikon 55-200 VR lens. Not too pricey and the VR will help with camera shake at the longer focal lengths. See Ken Rockwell's website for tips on using the D40 to it's fullest extent.

Buy the 3100 which is a better camera at 14 megs andkeep the d40 for backup if it,s a 10 it will not be too far off from the 3100. all lenses and flashes are compatible.

No, don't upgrade to anything. He says that he's happy with the D40. Why should he spend money to get something that he may or may not find to his expectations. What EVERYBODY needs to realize is that specs are NOT everything. That personal comfort is far more important specs when both cameras are capable of meeting the users needs. We are in an economy where we need to be careful with money. If you don't have extra discretionary money don't spend don't spend it and don't encourage others to spend money that they may not have. We need to get away from this mode of everybody going out and trying to get the "latest and greatest".

I agree with dongrant - if the body is working, then stick with it, unless you need the added features (auto-bracketing, faster burst mode, video, etc) and if you want to upgrade anything, put money into a lens. High quality lenses will last a generation or more.

I'm in the bottom part, Charles County. I was born in DC but have been in MD for a long time.

I have the D40 and bought a D3200, figure I could use the same lenses, I prefer over the D3200 when working in close. That extra MP does help a lot when cropping, and the video is also great. But baby don't take my D40X away.
