No such thing as a straight wing Corsair. It's probably a Hellcat or another Grumman bird. All the Corsair's had bent wings to allow for prop clearance & shorter landing gear.

Beg to differ, there wee the gull wing design used by the Marine corps and a straight wing version used by the NAVY . Any body out there that can confirm this!

What I have photographed is the straight winged version. Memory ain't what it used to be but Im; fairly certain of these facts.

I believe you have photographed a Grumman 4F4 Wildcat. The prototype Corsair was gullwing from the beginning. See wikipedia as it has a photo of the prototype XF4U-1.

You are correct, a Grumman wildcat! No such thing as a straight wing corsair. I am a former Navy pilot.

I think your straight wing Corsair is actually a Vultee P-66 Vanguard:

Look closely at the cowling of the P-66 below. Gjeff has indeed taken a detailed photograph of a beautifully restored Grumman 4F4 Wildcat. Compare the lines of the cowling of the attached P-66 photo to Gjeff’s. Then look under the wing at the F4F’s landing gear that retracts flush with the fuselage behind the cowling. The P-66 gear retracts inwards to lie flush with the underside of the wings.

As already stated, the WWII F4U Corsair was designed from the onset with an inverted gull-wing so the landing gear could be shorter while still using a large diameter prop. The straight wing Corsair was a 1927 Navy biplane.

Number 3 is a Grumman Wildcat. Just check the landing gear. Extended from just aft of the cowling not from underwing as in the Hellcat.

Thanks
