Don't Know What Happened When This Picture Was Taken

All of you have great responses. Thank you. I STILL am not able to answer each of you individually. Tried the "
Reply Quote" button to no avail. I assure you no alcohol, mirrors, glass, parallel universes, etc. were used at the time. I had taken my sister to Easter Mass and was outside the church waiting for a procession to begin when the photo was taken.
My thought is that the internal mirror suddenly got lazy and couldn't get out of it's own way in the split second that the photo was taken. As I have said, it hasn't happened before or since. That's why I'm so curious about it. You've all been very kind in your assessments.

We were on vacation in Portimao, Portugal on Easter Sunday when this picture was taken. I can't seem to find anyone who can give me an answer as to why it happened. The camera used is a Canon EOS T2i and the lens is a Tamron AF Aspherical XR Di 28-300. Please do not ask if the photo has been photoshopped, as it has not. This is the way it came out. I did, however, crop the subject for the second photo. Any help would be appreciated. It has never happened before or since.

OK, this is going to be difficult because you have chosen to keep your location secret. Secondly, as my esteemed UHH associate, TucsonCoyote, pointed out, things happen in countries such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Mexico during holy observances that can't be explained away through the use of science.

Thus, one can only suggest that you approach the Holy Pontiff with this photograph and see if it falls in the category of, possibly, being a miracle. If it is, it could be one of the first to ever be recorded live as it happened.

As for your location being important in making an assessment, your question might be, "what has that got to do with it"? Well, in my experience, limited as it might be by 5 years of Catholic school, most times miracles are not witnessed by the upper crust, shall we say. It's usually people on the lower rungs of society's ladder. So, if you disclosed that you lived in, let's say, one of the areas outside of downtown Brazil, for instance, claims of witnessing a miracle might be more easily believed than if you lived in an upper Manhattan penthouse apartment.

To honestly answer your statement here about the mirror. The mirror swings upward to clear the path for the light to strike the sensor. If the mirror had gotten stuck, or in the way, that portion of the image obscured by the mirror would have been simply in shadow and no image would have been recorded by that portion of the sensor.

Believe me, I do not believe this "happening" was a miracle. As you have pointed out, if the mirror was in the way, there would've been a much different effect. There, however, must be an explanation of why something like this can happen within a camera. Could be just a freak thing and no explanation can be found.

Yes but notice the split happened in the perfect place. Right on the flag bearer.

Looks like something some would done on purpose. For effect.

What are the chances.

I agree, but I don't think that, even I, could do it THAT perfectly!

It is amazing how the line of the reflection is right down the center line of the banner, without any distortions of letters or symbols.

Yeah, you're right. Guess I'll have to succumb to the miracle theory.

I don't know anything about Canons, buy my Olympus TG2 has a "Mirror" special effects setting that will take a photo like this. You may also have one that you accidentally stumbled upon.

It's "divine intervention"... that's an "immaculate photo"!

But seriously, it probably was just a glitch when the image went through the A/D converter and was written to the memory card. I've seen strange stuff... such as multiple images or "missing parts" in digital images... that was probably produced the similarly. This IS stranger than most, though. Sort of a one-in-a-billion or one-in-a-trillion event.

Did you buy a Powerball ticket? You really should!

I believe he was referring to a mirror effect in your editing program. Never used it, but I believe some programs have that ability. Does yours? Pretty neat just the same.
