I bought my Nikon D750 from them with 1yr Parts , 90 day Labor Warranty by seller and saved more then $500.00. Till now do not have any problem. I registered my camera and updated firmware.

I came across a company in New Jersey - "Deals all Year" selling Sony A7rii for about 20% discount. The same discount on Sony fe lenses. They are rated 100% by e-bay and they accept PayPal as well as sending you an invoice detailing the purchase before you buy. These are gray market items without Sony U.S. warranties. They do sell a 3 year policy for all eventualities for $249. and the repair station is an authorized dealership in New Jersey. Sounds very good. Anyone have opinions?? Has anyone done business with these people? Will appreciate help in making a decision. Many thanks, Zing444

Just read that they used to be Ryther Camera and they changed their name. As Ryther Camera, they had a very bad reputation. Maybe that is why they changed their name. BBB gave them a rating of "F" and do not recommend doing business with them.

Many times also these gray market sellers strip out items that are standard in the US and then tell you you need also to buy a battery or battery charger etc.

Had a friend last year take his Nikon D200 with 200,000+ clicks to an authorized repair center to have the shutter replaced as it had finally died. He got a call a few days later that through the serial number it had been determined his Nikon D200 was a grey market camera and they could not get parts for it. He has had this camera for almost 10 years and never knew it was grey market. I can understand warranty repair but simple age related service is also denied. According the the authorized dealer basic cleaning was also denied. If it is grey market they want nothing to do with it. My friend was told that if they got caught servicing grey markey for any reason Nikon would pull their authorization.

Bottom line, grey market to save 20% is NOT worth it .............

The OP clearly acknowledges that it's gray market but does it really matter? He saves 20% on a brand new item. What are the chances of it breaking down? If you buy an item on Ebay or similar site you don't get a warranty either so whats the difference.
Buy gray market wherever you can and use the money you saved for other items.

I agree. One caveat. If you buy grey market the item usually cannot be repaired by the factory or factory-authorized establishments, and parts will (usually) not be sold to a repair facility.
If you buy a used USA item, like on eBay, it CAN be repaired in the US.
Still, 20% is a great savings.

So is there an easy way, when buying used, to determine if the item being sold is actually a USA item? Seller my not even know he has a grey market item but my also be selling it because it is. Can a serial number help?

Was there a problem with you wanting to post the company name?

Many thanks for all of the comments. This company is the "real thing". I think the savings is well worth any risk of malfunction that may occur down the road. I'll let you know in a year or so.

Is it possible that the problem with the "grey market" is a problem with the nature of electronics in cameras. I say this because I bought a lot of grey market lenses in the day--made by Nippon Kogaku, but not imported by EPOI, Also, a number of photojournalists would buy from A. White in Hong Kong or from companies they ran into while on vacation in SE Asia.

In my career, I had one shutter fail in a mechanical Nikon and that was repaired by a non company service.

What I think the big two are doing comes from the recognition that there will be a certain amount of defective product they have to deal with and that they build their pricing accordingly. They do not figure in the gear that comes in from other sources.

Gray market is fine, as long as it is a trusted seller such as B&H. Grey market will, most likely, become a problem if anything goes wrong. In the case of Canon and Nikon, they will not repair any grey market items which means shipping them somewhere else, perhaps overseas, and waiting longer. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Oh really? Obvious? How so?

You can...
Ask the seller point blank, "is this grey market?" If they say they don't know...don't buy it, or
You can ask for the serial number and check with the manufacturer. If you do buy it this way, make sure the serial number they gave you matches the one that's actually on the item.

I just opened Amazon looking at Sony lenses for the sony a7rii. They are advertising and selling gray market lenses (so stated and without sony warranty). Responses from questions about gray market are that the product is identical to that coming with a sony u.s. warranty, execepting the warranty is not included and sometimes the instructions are in a foreign language.

The Sony photo website does not show anything about refurbished products.
