Converting to LightRoom 6 from 5?

I am thinking of purchasing, or leasing as the case may be, the Adobe PS/LR6 package for $10/month. My delema is that I have 30-40K of photos currently in LightRoom 5, all nicely catalogued and edited. My question is, if I buy into the Adobe package, will all of my photos be automatically brought into the new version of LR including all edits and catalogues, or will there be a whole lot of preliminary and additioanl work I will have to do?

Each time I've upgraded, starting from 4, the option is offered to convert existing catalogs to match the requirements of the newer version. Further, it does it by making a new catalog from the old. The old LR version and old catalog remain in place and will continue to operate. The exception is that any work done in the new catalog will not show up in the old.

The usual procedure is to upgrade, allow the new catalog to fill and check for any concerns. Once happy with how things are working, the old version can be uninstalled and the old catalogs deleted.

I use Lightroom CC (subscription) Each time I have upgraded, my catalog converted with zero problems. Once converted you have a NEW catalog and your old version still exists until you erase it so you could always go back to the older version of Lightroom if you had to.

I would expect no issues though.

You'll be fine, it makes a backup before doing anything. Good luck.

Just so you understand, photos are not touched during the upgrade process, only your catalog is updated. The catalog holds all the information about your photos, not the photos themselves. While the upgrade process does make a copy of your catclog, I would backup my catalog, user presets folder and everything else prior to upgrading.

FYI you can still buy LR 6 as a stand-alone product but boy do you have to dig deep on the Adobe website.

Or buy it in a box that has a DVD in it and not pay sales tax or shipping.

Thanks. That's $142.99@ B&H. I would pay sales tax because I live in NY, but shipping is free.
I think a downloaded upgrade from Adobe might be less.

Adobe periodically has a sale and the price goes down. I bought my upgrade directly from Adobe last April, and it was only $79.

But if you cannot wait, don't worry. The upgrade is painless, and whenever you access a catalog that was done in LR5, the program will ask if you want to have it updated. When you say "yes", there is a momentary wait, and everything continues without any hitch.
