One problem with the combination of ST and the 5s is that the phone keeps asking me if I want to "update carrier settings" and if I say YES, it loads a profile that is for TFone. And when that happens, you lose all data connections from the Internet. Essentially shuts off data and you have to do a complete reset of the phone to get it back. At which point it will again start asking if you want to update carrier settings.... I always have to answer NO but it keeps asking. ARRRG!!

You can usually go into your phone settings and change them manually. Just a matter of setting things up correctly. You shouldn't lose internet access if your plan provides internet access.

There are two major types of networks (different technologies) GSM and CDMA (WCDMA). Most any GSM type of phone can be unlocked and used on any other GSM network. CDMA phones even though they might have a SIM will usually only work with the original carrier. Carriers don't like you to switch, they prefer to have you "locked" in. If you can unlock your phone, you can take it to a different carrier/service. Bring your own phone is what I did. There are services out there that will unlock locked phones, for a fee, either that or unlock it yourself.

His new phone will be a non-contract LG Ultimate 2. It will arrive at Best Buy in a day or two. That will be getting a clean start with TracFone.

Well, I would love to agree with you... And I've been a techie for my last 55 years so it wouldn't be tough thing to do... But I haven't found the info nor the settings in the iPhone to do that. I'll keep digging. Haven't found anyone else complaining either.

I removed the SIM card from my 4s. I asked Tracfone if I needed a SIM card and their answer was no. I have had no problems whatsoever. Total cost for original setup was $9.99!

I would think the SIM card would let them know who you are but maybe the SN would allow the same. Will give that a try. However, where did you find your 4s sim card? My 4s doesn't have a sim slot.

Looking at the screen it's on the right side approx. in the middle of the side rail. It's about 1/2" long with a small hole at one end. You have to insert a paper clip or some small object that will fit in the hole. Push object into hole and it will pop open revealing the tiny SIM card. At least that is how mine works.

Yup... That's where it is on the 5s but on the 4s there is no such slot. Just checked.. It's an iPhone 4, not a 4s. That might make a difference.

I hate to disagree but you are wrong. I own the 4s and it is exactly as I described. Google iPhone 4s images and you can see for yourself.

I have had a TracFone for about 18 months and find it adequate for a non avid smart phone user. One minor warning: if you are not currently browsing the web, turn off your mobile connection. I found that alerts and emails chewed up a lot of data. 1200MB is not much so don't waste it! Wi-Fi doesn't count against your data usage. :)

I wasn't arguing with you and I can't be wrong because I just stated the facts. You have a 4s, I have a 4. Your 4s may very well have a sim card slot (which I DO KNOW how it works) but my 4 does not.

I guess you didn't read my last carefully enough.

Ok, my final post on this subject. I removed my (Straighttalk) sim card from my 5s and it wouldn't do a thing. Told me there was "no sim card installed" and became a wi-fi only ipod.

Yes, you are running without a sim card on a 4s. Enjoy

Read your own message. You state the 4s does not have the sim slot now you state it may. Tried to help you but you have your own opinions so good luck.

No, you read the message.... You missed the last part:

Whatever......

Well, to be honest, I've never owned an iPhone so I wouldn't know. However I do know how, where to find such settings in an Android or a Windows phone.

My last message to you. You have gotten me completely confused. I answered your original question and it led to all this nonsense. Bottom line is I have an iPhone 4s and it has a slot and I don't care what other phones have. I am not interested in all about that. Case closed!!
