Can anyone verify yet if the D500 will have the GREAT new AF Fine Tune setup that the D5 has? All you have to do now with the D5 is take a sharp shot in LV, then the camera will automatically set the PDAF in-camera AF to match that. Very slick.

From DP Review's write up: "An AF module developed for full-frame means unprecedented frame coverage on the APS-C D500, in this case with cross-type sensors available out to the literal edges of the frame. Furthermore, Nikon is introducing Auto AF Fine-Tune, which appears to use Live View (focus at the image plane) to automatically calibrate (at least the center point of) the Phase Detect AF module for any given lens 'with a few button operations'. This should help address arguably one of the biggest shortcomings of DSLRs relative to mirrorless cameras: the fact that the AF module is only a proxy for focus and, therefore, prone to inaccuracy. I would like to have the new D500. I have a D7000 and a D200 now. I would gladly give up the D7000 to get get a D500 but I won't part with my D200. I may end up setteling for a D7200 when the price has a significant drop. The new D500 sounds like a real dream camera but Nikon should have included a pop up flash for convenience sake and broader buyer appeal..

Here's an interesting quote from the Nikon USA website:

"Not quite ready to upgrade to XQD? That’s no problem, as the D500’s dual memory card slots can accept SD media as well. Although compact in size, the D500 certainly packs a punch."

Am I reading this correctly to say you can put an SD card in the QXD slot?

Dual slots. One for each. With the D5, it is one or the other, they offer it in two versions, one will take two XQD's and one will take the other.

I've been hoping for years for another replacement card for Compact Flash that isn't compatible with anything else.

And now we'll need a new card reader, too, unless we want to hook up via USB to our computers--or will we be able to do that wirelessly, and how fast is that?

I cannot believe that Nikon In it's infinite wisdom has released a $2000 camera WITHOUT a POP UP FLASH and will fully expect us SHEEP to spend an additional $600 on their new WIFI controlled flash ! WHAT A LOAD OF BS !
Why a pop up ? BECAUSE MANY of us purchased NIKON for their CLS (CREATIVE LIGHTING SYSTEM) that allows us to trigger off camera speed lights, which of course many of us have invested many hundreds of dollars on ! I've waited almost 6 years to upgrade my D300s, and have made the jump to FX with a D800, and D800e, and I honestly hoped for a NIKON DX upgrade to that matched or exceeded my FUJI X100s and XT1 crop sensors... IF Nikon keeps pissing on the feet of their loyal customers, Nikon's bubble is going to burst... Some say it already has !
I cannot believe that Nikon In it's infinite wisdo... (show quote)

The specs say the D500 supports CLS.

You're right on target. I talked with a Nikon ambassador about the D5 and D500. He said they're great for sport shooting but recommended that I continue with the D810 and D800 as my workhorses and that if I wanted to add anything to add the D750 because of the articulating screen for ground shots in architecture and real estate. I think I'll take his advise.

Moon, I don't know about your dog shots, but these types of cameras are not really designed for things like bird shooting. Though one can always use fps, these sports cameras are always very low in mp. Small birds almost always require a lot of cropping and the feather detail falls apart quickly with the low mp. You're better off with a D810 for that if you shoot Nikon. In sports, peoeple are big and not usually to far away, so the detail stays strong. Just my opinion. ;-)

True, but you need an auxiliary transmitter, such as the SU-800 or any of the upper-end flashes, or for radio, the new SB 5000.
The pop-up flash was convenient as it was built-in.
I liked the SU-800 because the menu was right there in front of me.
The Phottix Odin is even easier to use.

It's amazing how people are quick to accept Nikon's claim of high ISO capability for cameras based on the maximum ISO numbers. Does anyone believe this DX camera at ISO say 1000-6400 will have less noise than any recent Nikon FF camera? (discounting possible aggressive noise reduction in Jpegs) If so, how, technically could this be achieved? Yes you can dial in a very high ISO right on the camera, but with an earlier camera you can shoot at a lower ISO and boost 4 stops or more exposure compensation in post processing.

Look at Nikon D4s. You can dial in ISO 409,600. On D750 you can dial in as high as 51,200. (both extended range) So D4s must have a lot better high ISO performance, right? DxO doesn't think so, and they did exhaustive measurements. For D4s Sports (Low Light ISO) 3074. For D750 the number is 2956. And if you read the explanations on their site, that's a very small difference.

For wildlife handheld you need high shutter speed in low light.

My D800 is much lower noise than my D5300 at ISO above 400. But it only gives me 15MP on the DX area vs. 24. So some of the lower noise is clearly due to the larger sensor pixels: more signal so less noise with the same S/N.

Newer sensors generally deliver higher S/N. Plus the new Expeed 5 processor might do more inherent noise reduction. We'll have to wait on the testing to be sure but yes, I'm hopeful the D500 will do significantly better the crrent full frames D750 and D810.
