I upgraded from a Nikon D80 to the D7200. Was looking at the D7100 because the D7200 was just being released. I decided that because of the "minor" improvements in the new camera and and this would be a major upgrade for me to buy the D7200. At the time I purchased from Nikon there was only about $200 difference. Enough of why I did it, I love the camera. Not one second of regret. The low light capability, buffer size etc made it worthwhile for me. I took it to Machu Picchu one week after getting it. Great pictures and I am happy. And after all, if I am happy then that is all that matters.

Why people come on UHH and pose a question like this one instead of going to Google or DPReview is a mystery to me!

Personally, as a newbie to the photography scene, looking to purchase a DSLR in the future, I covet the opinions of people who have used the cameras in real world situations. That information is at least as valuable as the information I read on sites like dpreview.com, dxomark.com, etc.

I read these sites a lot, I compare cameras, lenses, brands, everything I can think of. The problem is, I don't know all the questions to ask. I don't know what all the tests mean, or what the scores mean. Additionally, those sites don't necessarily have all the cameras and lenses tested.

This site it full of experienced, knowledgeable photographers who have put their equipment through more than I will probably ever will, and are willing to share their experiences and offer invaluable advice and mentorship (to a degree) to the newbies like me. Therefore, asking "stupid" questions here, and reading through the forum for other people asking these questions allows me to make a well informed choice when I'm ready to fork out hundreds of dollars for a camera or a lens. In fact, that's the primary reason I originally searched out this site, was for research.

BTW, I did seriously consider the d7100 vs the d7200 and felt, for my personal opinion, I'd rather choose the d7200, because it is newer, does have the larger buffer, has slightly better low light ISO range and dynamic (landscape) range. Personally, I'm going back and forth over the d7200 and the d750. In the meantime, I'm busy taking pictures with my p900.

it is better to ask a "stupid" question than make a stupid mistake. as to a d7200 or a d750, choose the d750 if it is in your budget, if you get serious about photography, you will eventually want to upgrade to a full frame camera. that said, if you choose the d7200, save your money and only buy fx lenses, then when you decide to upgrade to a full frame camera, you will not need to reinvest in lenses, as lenses will be a greater investment than camera bodies.

Looking for opinions. I have been using a D5000 and I'm looking at an upgrade. For the most part I'm primarily interested in a Nikon that will perform better in low light. That being said I can get the 7100 presently for 400 less than the 7200 but because I plan on keeping the camera for several years, if there are considerably more benefits to the 7200 it may be worth the extra bucks! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. If your glass and needs dictate DX, grab the D7200 and don't look back. If FX, get the D750, budget permitting. I upgraded from D40 to D7100... and hated the buffer every time out. I went D7200 as soon as available. Never sorry I did. larger buffer, newer processor, fast AF. But now I sometimes wish I had gone from D7100 to D750 for just a few hundred $ more. Didn't because I have mostly DX glass. I shoot most everything I want now, sports-wildlife-kids-landscapes. Even low light is usually fine, but I do want the FX for night skies of Milky Way.

The attached chart provides all the info you need to make the decision. Check the download for a more readable chart.

You have more options than just those two.

If you are thinking long term investing and low light is priority you should look at the new Nikon D500. That one beats the hell out of everything else available now with crop sensor in terms of low light.

The D7100 or D7200 are no match to the new D500 in any way.

Why is it a problem? If you are put off by it, don't respond.

Again for those with severe comprehension issues, the op asked about the D7100 and D7200. The camera you mention isn't even available for purchase. Therefore you have never even used it but still have the gall to recommend it to someone. Geesus.
