Who are Jill and George?

I'm going through my Christmas cards, keeping track of what I sent and what I received. I came across one from "Jill & George." Who are they? Most cards have no return address - people saving time, I guess. Whoever they are, they won't be getting a card from me next year because I don't have any record of either a Jill or a George.

When I send my cards, I sign my last name, especially when I send them to high school friends because there were about eight Jerry's in my class. I've received several cards signed "Bob." Without a return address, I wouldn't know which Bob had sent the card, since I know several.

So, a suggestion: sign your mail and email with your first name and last.

I send it out only a precious few holiday cards each year, as I try to keep in touch more via e-mail. Your suggestion is obviously well-intended and I certainly cannot opine that it is wrong. However, to me at least, since I'm sending cards only to friends & relatives, but NOT business associates, it really feels awkward to write my last name on such a personal thing ... and nowadays, I receive free return address labels of all sorts mailed to me almost every week of the year.

Therefore, if I were able to, I'd amend your suggestion to read, So, a suggestion: ensure that your Return Address label is placed on EVERY card you mail, otherwise, sign your mail and email with your first name and last.

What do you think, jerry?

I won't disagree with you. I use a rubber stamp for the return address, since those "free" labels I get in the mail often have mistakes in name or address.

For many of the people I send to (about 25), a Christmas card is my only contact with them all year - long distance, distant relatives, for example. Several relatives and friends have the same first name, so seeing a last name would help.

On the other hand, people with whom I am in almost daily contact just get a "Jerry" at the bottom of the card. They'll recognize my handwriting, and there is always the return address.

I also send Jacquie Lawson digital cards to just about everyone I know - up to ninety-five now - but a paper card goes to close friends and relatives. Sending a card to a weak acquaintance puts pressure on them to send a return card. If someone goes three years without sending me a card, I remove them from my list. Lots of my friends don't send cards to anyone, for various reasons. I still send to some of them.

Sending greeting cards is big business, and we feel guilty if we don't send cards to people who resent not getting them. When you figure $5.00 is cheap for a greeting card, maybe going digital for birthdays and anniversaries is a good idea.

Thanks for the Jacquie Lawson link. In terms of Free Return Address Label mistakes, I get so many and instantly weed out those with mistakes that I still have "tons" remaining that are accurate.

It is sad, and frustrating.

I am one of the few physicians (in the country?) who regularly uses email with my patients. However - many people do not know about the "Sig" file (signature file) which will automatically insert their name and any other information they want into every email they send. So I will get an email from "pookypoo@gmail.com" or some such name with no other identifying information. It might say that they need a refill for their lisinopril or something like that. Hard to refill without a name! At least I can hit "Reply" and let them know that I have a very large address book and I really don't remember every single email address and name that goes with it!

Since I make all our cards (first picture), I annotate the back of each card with the comment "This card handmade especially for ______ by _______ and _______". I include my wifes name - last name different - because some of the cards we send, she draws. Others are pop-ups I make.

A couple of friends make all their own cards - year round. One makes so many that she sends them to various organizations.
