I love street photography for its candid look on life and some notable practioners of this art like Vivian Maiers work are legendary (watch Finding Vivian Maiers) Before politics ban candid shooting due to invasions of privacy.... and we lose another chapter in history

Great examples of traditional Street photography. We can have on going commentary about how the genre has and is changing, and why.

Okay!

It looks as if there will be enough interest to make for a useful section. Admin did not object, and in short order I will request it be initiated.

Oz

I can't envision any need for 24/7 monitoring, or even in multiple time zones.

Hence at least to begin with there is no problem. The rules need only be very simple: Gratuitous insults and name calling will be deleted.

In a Photo Gallery thread entitled "Question for street photographers" the OP, ozmerelda, asked "would it be possible to have a street photography section?"

A year ago I didn't expect it would be worth it, but since then there seems to be a lot more interest in strictly Street Photography. At this time that seems best placed in the "People Photography" section, but is that actually proper? Most of what goes into the People section are portraits, either studio portraits or people pictures, such as candids or environmental portraits, all of which have people as the subject.

But with Street Photography people is not the subject. The subject is life. The relationship between people and our surroundings. Strictly speaking Street does not require a person in the photograph (and for that matter doesn't require a street either).

Street Photography is an image of the tangible evidence of a non tangible subject.

Perhaps discussions about Street would become more specific, and maybe more animated and interesting, if there was a section just for that genre of photography?

At least it's worth discussing.

Yes, a very significant suggestion as well as genre. I, personally, have contributed few, if any, photos so far because Street Photography is my interest.

I strongly encourage you to start a new segment with that designation.

Thanks for bring this important matter up for discussion.

Thank you for expressing that! It seems that most of us who do any amount of Street do not feel an otherwise very fine People Photography section can be quite appropriate for Street, which until now has left only the more general Sections to post in.

I have now requested that Admin create a new section for Street Photography. Hopefully it will be operational soon enough!

Good idea, but it might be an idea to broaden the spec a little. In the early sixties I did a lot of pictures of people in London pubs and although obviously not street photography it has a lot of the it was similar in a lot of ways to street photography with the same feelings and technical problems. What could it be called? A term (that I was never keen on but) sometimes used then was candid photography. Maybe someone could come up with something better.

Thank you for the discussion!

But that obviously is Street Photography! It fits the description quite well. Note that in "Bystander: A History of Street Photography" Joel Meyerowitz and Colin Westerbeck, on pages 180 and 181, specifically discuss such photography. They provided an example by Brassai in Fig. 9.11, labeled as "Couple at Bal Musette, Rue de Laffe, 1936." (I tried to find an online copy of the image with Google, and came up with several by Brassai that are similar to the Fig. 9.11 image, but didn't find exactly that one.)

This is exactly the type of topic and discussion that will be appropriate in a Street Photography section. My point would be that it might not be my particular style of Street, but if that is what someone wants to shoot... it is still Street, and I enjoy looking at it.

Thank you. It's in the works! I don't expect it will ever become a high popularity forum, but then I also expect it will remain interesting and useful.

Send a PM to St3v3M who runs the For Your Cosideration forum. He just may take it under wing as part of For Your Consideration. I hang out there and it would be easy to integrate it Im sure.
