Until the big boys can figure out how to make the lion's share of profit on a substance that you or I can grow in our back yard, the fight will continue. The first thing that FDR did upon taking office in 1933 was to initiate the repeal of the Volstead Act which had given this country 'prohibition'. He did so because the country was broke and the sale of booze could be taxed, thus refilling the empty federal coffer.Money and control are the cards being played.Hemp, which has myriad positive uses from cloth, paper, chemicals and joints was made illegal by a strong tobacco and booze monopoly which did not want the competition in a game where our magazines and radio programs were shamelessly sponsored by these industries, without any regard for the public health. The same BS is working today. Under the obfuscation of control, substance quality and dosage concerns [ all pretty much made to look valuable but contrived] a simple plant which can make you feel good when you want to feel good is kept legally out of your hands. Personally, I don't care to use it, but might change my mind if I could grow it myself without the threat of some insane SWAT team coming down on me. WTF.

The FDA still categorizes marijuana as a "Schedule 1" drug - no clinical use or risks far outweighing any potential clinical use. Long ago, though, they approved synthetic THC as "safe and effective" for medical use - at $1600 per month for 60 capsules of course. Does money talk? Obviously it speaks loud and clear.

FYI: we have found that CBD (cannabidiol) to some extent blocks some of the effects of THC, which is more responsible for the "stone" effect. Indica strains which have a higher relative amount of CBD tend to be less psychoactive and more effective for pain and inflammation. In states where medical marijuana is legal patients have the options of trying various strains to find the one that works best for them. They also can try different means of using the MMJ. Ingesting it takes longer to work, has a slightly different effect than smoking, and lasts longer. This makes it sometimes more useful at bedtime.

When I practiced in Maine I certified over 200 patients for MMJ. About 90% of them were seeking certification for chronic pain, and the average age was 55. I certified three patients over the age of 80. We have very few choices in the treatment of chronic pain - opiates have very obvious limitations, and the "non-steroidal anti-inflammatories" (ibuprofen, etc.) cannot be taken by those with declining kidney function and cause bleeding ulcers that kill some 13,000 Americans every year. My patients with chronic pain, who generally use their MMJ in the evenings and before bed, often tell me that it has been "life-saving".

Another theory, most states have turned their prisons over to the private sector. In the agreement to the private corps. the state agrees to keep the prison 90% occupied
which, marijuana helps tremendously keep that 90% agreement. You can research longer prison time for weed than, many heinous crimes. When California voters voted to legaliqe pot. The federal gov said they would not allow it, that's bold that a sovergn state has no authority.

Private prisons are becoming a problem - lots of cost with very little good results. When someone has a vested financial interest in putting people behind bars, everyone suffers.

Only when most politicians come down with chronic pain will they consider making its medicinal use legal.

I hope we can use this for pets who have chronic renal/hepatic disease. We have a tendency to use the NSAIDs in our pets to find comfort but at the same time doing even more damage

Okay everybody, the rational solution is to work in your state for the passage of a law to legalize medical and recreational use of marijuana... or simply move to Colorado where we've already done that and have great photographic opportunities to sweeten the deal!!!

It certainly might be a good alternative.

As much as I support medical marijuana, I have mixed feelings about total legalization (but I don't feel anyone should ever go to jail for using this and most other drugs). In Colorado they have pushed to develop ever-stronger strains of marijuana and create ever-stronger ways of using it. Not sure how smart that is and why it would be necessary.

Some people still believe the old movie Refer madness which 40n years ago I smoked and did inhail a lot. Know where I saw weed the very first time Well I was stationed at Ft. Bragg NC. In the military, and I grew up on a farm moved to a large city, but never smoked it until military. Dupont lobbied and lobbied , finally they got somes family elected to congress, and made the silly refer madness which was BS. Henry ford made a car out of hemp so hemp got banned. until recently part of NC can grow commercial hemp now we would have saved so many trees butGov knows what is best for us . While banned the US was the largest hemp importer.

Our government's paranoia about anything that feels good is a tragic history. How much damage has been caused by marijuana versus how much damage has been caused by incarcerating people for using this relatively harmless plant? Another example of paranoia is MDMA. Psychiatrists have found that for patients with autism and severe social anxiety this drug can have profound beneficial effects - even with just a few doses! This is a drug that - in the form of "Ecstasy" - those who have used it describe their lives as being profoundly benefited from using it. And very little risk (from pharmaceutical grade) -so it was a drug that HAD to be outlawed! One of the last reports by Peter Jennings was a look at MDMA - very informative (45 minutes):
