These benefits are usually a result of benefits worked out between employees and employers. They're not mandated by the government.

Probably because the industrial areas were in the North and Northeast.

As foreigner this is interesting for me to read. Here in Australia I was always aware that we get generous holiday arrangements.

Typically they are;
- annual paid leave of 10 days ( plus a pay loading of 17.5% of the holiday pay )

- paid public holidays such as Christmas day, New years day, good Friday, Australia day, labor day etc ( about 6 days a year )

- paid sick leave of 10 days per year, cumulative from year to year. Usually need medical certificate for more than a day or two. this does not convert to annual leave.

- long service leave of 13 weeks ( paid ) that can be taken after 10 years and which accrues at 1.3 per year. Some arrangements/awards allow it to be taken sooner eg 5yrs

- there are also small amounts of special Leave ( minding sick family0

- maternity benefits also-not sure of details but could be 3-6 months paid leave.

When I finished work over 10 years ago, after 36 + years, they had to pay me for about 10 months long service leave that I had not taken, plus my annual leave balance. I had to walk away from 350 odd days sick leave.These days large leave balances like that are discouraged

APOLOGIES . I made a mistake, the paid annual leave should be 20 days ( 4 weeks ) not 10 days.

I was just doing some research for an article and discovered that in America there is no mandated pay for either vacation or statutory holidays.

I'm assuming this means each state, union and/or employer then decides who gets paid for vacation or holidays, but I haven't been able to confirm this.

Would any hogs inform me as to which Statutory holidays and how many paid vacation days they receive each year? No names please, just numbers and your State.
Thanks.

Not sure where you are but it is never too late. it is a great place although along way away from much of the world if you have to see family regularly. That is not a problem for me as my antecedents migrated here in the 19th Century- not as convicts

I retired for an NYC agency and had 11 holidays, 12 sick days and 5 weeks vacation after 30 years. Different titles had floating holidays, upper management got no overtime and fewer holidays as they made a lot of dough already. Trades titles such as plumbers, electricians and carpenters had their deal for more money with no holidays. Newer contracts cut back on starting pay and other benefits like smaller pensions. I got out at the right time and I thank The Maker for showing me the light!

I retired from a school district here where benefits were far more attractive than wages. Was able to accumulate sick and vacation days and retired with a very much appreciated package including a small pension that we contributed to. In the end it was worth the difference, but in all honesty, we would not been able to raise our kids on the wages they offered were our kids still at home.
