Sounds like you are a contractor and not an employee. Maybe you need a new Union.

I was just doing some research for an article and discovered that in America there is no mandated pay for either vacation or statutory holidays.

I'm assuming this means each state, union and/or employer then decides who gets paid for vacation or holidays, but I haven't been able to confirm this.

Would any hogs inform me as to which Statutory holidays and how many paid vacation days they receive each year? No names please, just numbers and your State.
Thanks.

When I was working, we had 10 paid sick days a year, and they could accumulate up to 200. Major U.S. holidays we were closed, so they were paid holidays - Christmas, Thanksgiving, not Arbor Day or National Pie Day. We also had two personal days, but they had to be approved ahead of time. This was decided all by the employer, no input wanted from the union.

Among industrialized nations, the U. S. ranks way down the list for worker time off, which is great for corporations.

Worked for a global bank. Each country was different. Here in the US we had a program called TOP (Time Off Program). I had 38 days a year in it. It included all sick, vacation, personal days in it. Your choice how and when to use. National holidays were paid if the bank closed. Being in IT in the backroom that wasn't as much as the branch people.

The short answer is that there is no 'one' answer. It depends on the job, skills, union representation, enlightened employer, etc.

However, I have never heard of anyone not being allowed to take at least 2 weeks vacation per year. However, not all employers will make this paid vacation.

Well, we are a work oriented culture. What killed us is the high cost of labor.

Thank you, Bobbee. Could you tell me what country the company is headquartered in?

Thank you.

There is no mandate. Where I work they are only closed on Christmas Day and there is no holiday pay. Most employers offer a standard set of paid holidays, but it is their choice.

Wow! That seems harsh, especially for a union company. Thanks for replying.

Thanks, Jerry. Your experience seems more in line with what I was expecting.

That's interesting. I hadn't heard of that system before. Thanks.

You make it sound like something sinister. I am not "lurking" anywhere, I currently live in Canada again but have lived several places across Europe.

I've worked for 2 major publicly owned corporations and 1 privately owned company.
All had similar vacation/holiday policies: 2 weeks vacation to start, increasing with another week added periodically over time. Everyone received the same paid holidays (9?). A portion of that time could be carried over to the next year otherwise days were lost. (Never an issue for me.)
Paid sick days (12 per year) could be taken and accumulated with no limit to protect income in case of a major illness/injury.
The trend now appears to be towards employers providing "x" number of days off with no distinction between vacation or sick days. I know several people who, because of their level, have "unlimited" vacation days.

Hope this helps.
