Can you say more about a cheap lens? Some have suggested a 50mm len?

Buy the best lens you can afford.
Cheap lens = cheap portrait.
Lens is much more important than the camera for portraits.
I prefer the 70-200 in a 2.8 if you can get it.
The 85 1.8 will work in a pinch.
The 100 macro will also work in a pinch.

First two shots below with the canon 70-200 f2.8L is II
The last is the 85 1.2 L

Not cheap but the 85 1.8 is close to this quality. I just use the more expensive glass to get an edge.
When starting out you don't need an edge.

Best of luck
Russ Elkins

Last month I bought the Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC for my 5D Mark II and 7D and WOW!!! I checked dxomark website for the Tammie and Canon. The Tamron rates the same and the best part is that my total cost after the $200 rebate was $900. This lens is rocking in the Canon shooter's world. It's EXCELLENTE'. The deal's still going on. I also bought the SP 70-200 f/2.8 Di VC and now have two perfect lenses for nearly all my shots for half the price of Canon.

I'm pretty new so not positive what's the best way to go on a fairly limited budget. It's been recommended I look at a 24-70mm F2.8 but can't afford that unless someone is generous with a price on a used one......Or a 50mm good prime lens. Open to suggestions and help. Thanks.

Cheap you say? I am liking the Rokinon (Samyang) 85/14 manual focus which fits nicely with tripods for portrait work. Sold chipped for AF for Nikon only (unless they have added others), but third party chipped adapters are available if AF is wanted. $267 USD new from multiple suppliers, under $200 used.
