Hi gang
I need advice on what lens to use tomorrow. I am chaperoning (sp) my daughters girl scout troop on a trip to the butterfly place in Westford MA. I won't have a lot of time to be swapping out different lens'. I have a 50mm, 18-55 and 55-200. I want to leave just one on there. What would be my best bet? The 50mm?

I went to a Butterfly place in Salem Oregon last fall, and I mostly used my 100mm 2.8, and my 70-200mm f4. They did not allow you to use tripods/mono-pods, or Flash, so everything had to be hand held. and Light lighting was varied. VERY Challenging, but was an amazing event.
Have fun!

I regularly shoot in two Butterfly Pavilions in Los Angeles County. I use only my 105-mm macro lens, with an O-Flash attachment on my speedlight. My typical setting at ISO 400 is 1/200-sec at f/16. Here are a few images.

Very nice... ! I sure wish the one near us would let us use flash. I for sure would have had a lot more keepers!
Beautiful shots!

ANY lens will work. The question is: how much of your image do you want to be butterfly, and how much background? The longer your focal length, the better chance you have of getting more butterfly in your image.

Good ans there Nikonian72

Butterfly Place is a small venue, no tripods, longer lens is better, also bring microfiber to keep the lens clean and dry, it is usually warm and lens fogging can be an issue, the staff is great, in formative abd friendly. Watch for the birds as well
