While one of the most embarassing, to say the least, events in American history at least the people were not mistreated.

Falsely imprisoned on the basis of race sounds like mistreatment to me. Let's just say they weren't physically tortured.

Let's hope that the current geopolitical climate combined with murderous extremists that are claiming to act on a gross abuse of various religious faiths do not cause us to go down a similar path as some would be politicians are suggesting.

Adams was forbidden to show guard towers with armed soldiers in them, along with barbed wire fences that kept them enclosed (imprisoned).

???? Why no German or Italian American camps? You don't think there were any HATE feelings? The 442 Regimental Team was the most decorated unit in the Army!

USA Army Retired here

This is also covered in the experieces of George Takei, Mr. Sulu of Startrek fame. Addressed in both Jennifer Kroot's excellent documentary 'To Be Takei' and also the musical 'Allegiance'.

Not our finest hour. While safety and security are important, we need to avoid condemning entire populations by simplistic categorization or labels.

Located on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in California; between the towns of Independence and Lone Pine; the highway (US 395) leads to many freshwater lakes in the wild back country.

On the surface it would seem like they may have been mistreated, but looking deeper, with the climate of war in the Pacific, were these American citizens in reality in protective custody?

A little farther North on US 395 and we will come to Mono Lake at a town named, Lee Vining, and another highway called the Tioga Pass and the Eastern entrance to Yosemite. The location of some of Ansel Adams most famous photographs.

He also took a number of photographs around Olancha and Lone Pine.

Manzanar is now a National Historic Site and falls under the National Parks Department. I have visited Manzanar a number of times since the early 70s. I am very happy that the site is being preserved. There is now an outstanding Museum there and well as a driving tour of the area.

I don't like what it stands for, but I am happy it is being preserved, LEST WE FORGET what stupid things we have done.

To the OP, thank you for posting this link. It shows a side of Ansel Adams I didn't know existed.

The logic of this supposition defies any definition of mistreatment and "protective custody." Losing your home, possessions, job, and being forced to live in a prison encampment in which you could be shot for trying to leave your "protective custody" because you are a particular race is MISTREATMENT of the highest order. The "protective custody" assertion is one of the most irrational, unethical, and stupidest arguments I have heard.

FWIW: Dorothea Lange was also commissioned to Photograph the camps. Her work was squashed at the time because she showed the "other side" of internment. It seems there might have been some propaganda involved. Who knew?
