jmarazzi Loc: Moving around to stay out of the HEAT

I was wandering around my local Apple store and had to ask three staff people before anyone could answer a MBP question. As I was waiting for #3 to become available, I decided to do a little user research. Of the 9 tables dedicated to product displays, 2 had 13" & 15" MBPs, one had something like tablets with removable keyboards, and all the others had either iPhones or iPads displayed. I didn't include the counters around the store, where some iMac's (I think that's what they are now) and iPods were located.
I makes me wonder what the future holds for those of us loyal MBP users. Maybe it's time for me to look more seriously at a (gasp!) Windows-based laptop. Since I have to move over to Lightroom anyway, I could use the money I save on the new laptop on - yea, that new lens!
Just a thought...

Ah, yes - laptop or lens is something practical instead of something vital !

Can't really agree with your assessment. Apple has always been about personal and portable. Desktops are on their way out, but your MacBooks are safe with Apple.

Jargon - what the heck is an MBP? MacBook Pro? Apple is still advertising them!

Be a really, really sad day when I would think I have to get rid of my IMAC desktop and got back to a winblows world, yep for sure.

Dropping limited use software is one thing, but cutting off desktop and portable computers in favor of ONLY IPads and IPhones is something that would be really really dumb in my opinion.

I found Lightroom an excellent replacement for Aperture over a year ago, love the CC subscription, at only $10.00 a month, leaves a lot of money for a lens or camera goodies ;)

The MacBook Pro will never leave. Too many people still use them.

I can't imagine Apple ever discontinuing the MacBook Pro, as it's the workhorse of their laptop line. Their others are smaller and lighter, but they don't have the capacity for the larger amount of GB or memory that can be installed on the MacBook Pro.

I'm sticking with mine. It's now a 2010 model-- but the "geniuses at the bar" aren't trying to sell me something new…so that says something….

Some folks say Apple is a software company that only sells hardware to guarantee a stable platform for said software. That Apple doesn't really want to sell computers at all..... I don't buy that but who really knows.

Here's one breakdown of Apples sales: http://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-q3-2014-hardware-sales-by-the-numbers/

According to those numbers Apple sold 3 times as many tablets as they did Macs, be they laptops or desktops, so it makes sense the store would focus more resources on tablets. The tablet market is HUGE and I think Apple is recognizing the need for a low cost model - I got an iPad Mini 2 for $200 last week.

How many people can do everything they need on a tablet with a half decent keyboard? 70%, 80%, maybe more? There will always be a market for power users though, so I can't imagine full blown computers going away any time soon.

I put windows on my iPad, just kidding. I used to be a PC user, but after my son introduced me to the MAC world I never looked back. I wouldn't know or care about the PC systems, I enjoy using my iPad but also use the desktop for other works...

Apple is strong in it's phone and tablet markets they work well at what they do and are pretty competitively priced.

Apple make fine computers and OSX is much nicer to use than windows, it often seems with windows the user serves the computer and mac the other way round. Apple computers are quite nice but I question some of their recent design choices. Such as soldered in ram that can't be upgraded and a single io port which is also for the power. I understand the desire to make attractive designs but not having that pursuit interfere with the usability of the system.

It shouldn't be the case where an earlier used model, would be more attractive to me than many current models. Hopefully Apple will see sense but it would mean admitting they were wrong and that may be the biggest obstacle to increasing market share with their computer division.

I just bit the bullet and upgraded to the new MBP 13 inch with retina display. I still have my older one which I loved, but the new one is so much lighter and faster and so far I think I made the right choice. The retina display is incredibly sharp and I even edit on it most of the time. When needed, I have a 30 inch Apple monitor that I use. I use LR and store my images on a remote hard drive so the computer drive doesn't fill up. I know they are on the expensive side but once you use a Mac you'll be hooked for life.

I doubt that Apple will drop the MBP any time soon. It's way too popular all over the world. Aside from real life, I see them on TV and in movies all the time. I have one from 2011 with the internal hard drive, now a Samsung 500GB SSD. I don't like the Air, with its limitations.

I don't see them stopping making iMacs or the Mac Pro since there is still a market for them. But for sure they aren't as popular as lap tops or tablets...(just not as portable...LOL) I sure like my 27" iMac with the retina screen.
