A nice week of mid to upper forties forecast, so I will be out with cameras. As winter sets in, I will be digging into the "slide mountain" and revisiting some b&w negatives to "digitize". Rather than use any of my current improvised lighting -- either desk lamp, photo floods behind a scrim, etc. I am thinking of one of the led light boxes. I want one that operates off house current, can be wall hung and is no more than $125 (or so). Any experience?

Can you give an example of "one of the led light boxes"? I have a mountain of slides too!

If you go out to Adorama & B&H and search light boxes, you will find a bunch.. Plan to use it with the setup posted previously.

I think you need a light source that replicates the wavelength intensity of normal daylight. Or am I not understanding simething.

I thought so too, until I looked into it. All you need to do is have light within normal ranges and adjust the white balance in camera -- and / or shoot raw and adjust later.

This is the one I'm using:

It's larger than you need for copying, but it's also useful for sorting slides and a diffused light source for close-up work. For copying, I lay a sheet of black construction paper with a window cut out over it.

Here's how I copy -- since I copy no tripod, it would be useful if it will wall hang -- having it big enough for sorting, and for use as a light source -- both an added bonus. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-352833-1.html

You can use picture-frame wire to hang it on the wall. You won't need the diffuser on your slide holder, it will only act as a neutral density filter.

Great suggestion! Wouldn't have thought of it! May need to make a different slide holder -- the ES -1 doesn't appear to be removable.

Or remove the Plexiglas cover of the light box. :)

Home Depot have LED lights on a stand for under $100. Just a simple work light.
