Thick foam pipe insulation is another option. It's already slit, just cut to length.

That is really brilliant and you can just leave it in that pocket in the door. I am so digging out a piece of that. Thanks.

Cheaper would be swimming pool noodles. Cut yourself.

Have a look at this (I bought mine on Ebay for 99pence (UK)). I keep it attached to my Sigma 150-500 when on safari: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pod-R0017-B-Piastra-Red-Black/dp/B001QOGVQQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449142071&sr=8-1&keywords=pod+camera

I would like to do more shooting from my car this winter. My AF-s 500 is to heavy to clamp to the window. I have tried resting it on a pillow on the window which works, but is a bit awkward.

Online I have seen an assortment of bean bags with studs to mount heads and some contraptions that seem to clamp to the inner and outer door panels.

Any suggestions? I'm in a Ford Escape, so not the kind of height to the window opening like a big pick up or suv.

Don't have the engine running and have your window up at a good height for you and the camera, your eye should come to the finder and you should still be able to move camera up and down. I use an old sweat shit folded up and I place it under my camera. My lens comes to rest about half way or it should balance well on your sweat shirt. NEVER clamp anything to your window but if you do, tell your insurance rep that someone hit your window with a rock and broke it.

Go to birdsasart.com and Art has a bean bag for sale that is exactly what you are looking for. I used it a lot on a drive to alaska while shooting from my car. I also use it when shooting from blinds. It is more stable than a big tripod.

Here is a car-door bean-bag which you can also buy with a plate to attach your camera/lens to:

http://www.vertexphoto.com/camerabeanbagv2

It looks similar to a bean-bag designed for shooting which I purchased in the firearms section of Walmart. Flat on the bottom and a large V-shape on top to hold the rifle. Turned upside down it rests on the car door to sit the camera on. I bought two and emptied one out and filled it with foam chips to make it light enough to carry around should I need to.

Nice shots, everyone. How about carrying a small towel in the car? Just fold it into a square and rest it on the door.

Get in touch with MTShooter, he was selling an attachment that fit over the car window. Gary

What you're referring to is the Puffin Pad. They are no longer manufactured but I was lucky enough to pick one up when I visited MTShooter's store (Camera Cottage) during my road-trip last May.

I know someone who seems quite happy using one of those foam rubber strips made for insulating pipes - just cut it to the width of your window.

Take a look at this alternative -- I purchased one and have been satisfied with it. The only negative I've found is that it's a little bulky, but works very well.
