I have heard that standalone will be going too...
Please tell me from who?

I lived in an RV for a couple years where we didn't always have an internet connection. We still found a way to check our emails and monitor a couple bank accounts. Most boaters still get to go to marinas for supplies, fuel, parts, food, etc. Living on a boat now, getting occasional internet connections should not be hard.

One point to consider: Most businesses will not announce their future plans to the public. That would decrease any competitive advantage they may have. Consequently, a company like Adobe will make a statement like "We have no plans to discontinue Lightroom as a standalone product" or "We have no plans to provide updates to a standalone Lightroom"

Neither of those statements really means anything. Business plans change frequently, so LR6 could be supported for the next 20 years or support could be withdrawn next week.

Many people think that Adobe will get people hooked on CC, then raise the price. While I would not be surprised at a rise in prices after a few years (inflation happens), I would not expect a price rise to be something that would knock a lot of people out of the market for CC.

CC has become fairly popular with photographers, although not everyone agrees. As a popular program, it makes Adobe some money, and I don't think they are likely to turn away nonprofessional photographers who are repeat customers.

I am not an Adobe employee or insider, so the above is purely speculation on my part. But I run a business that depends on customers for profit, so I'm trying to apply my small business experience to a large business.

Watching this thread!

Doing the trial version of LR right now. Having trouble getting my head around the 'catalog' concept.

I have my images in folders by year, and subfolders by date. E.g.: in my 2015 folder I have a sub-folder called 9-27-15 lunar eclipse. within that folder are my images from that night.

What would LR do to this file structure? I haven't done a whole-hog import yet, obviously. Still figuring this out.

Your setup sounds exactly like mine. Lightroom doesn't care, and will not change any of it. I made a few changes to the structure before installing LR, and that is how it remains. I download my raw images to a separate folder, which never gets worked on. From that folder, I import into LR, specifying the folder name within the year folder. I also have the files converted to DNG, but that is not an issue. When I export pictures, I have them go into a 'jpeg' folder, beneath the existing folder.

As long as you do any moving within LR, it will not care how you have the file tree structured.

One suggestion I would make is to change your subfolder name to "09-27-15 Lunar eclipse. This will allow the folders to sort properly. If you do not add the leading 0, November and December's folders would be sorted between January and February. This is only applying to access and sorting *outside* of LR, of course.

If you put the year last, you will have 09-27-15 right before or after 09-26-14, or 09-23-13 or whatever. Always using the YY/MM/DD format eliminates this confusion.

I learned this the hard way. 8-)

In checking, it seems to me that I am better off with one Catalog and adding folders for various projects and subfolders within the folders, years etc.
I am retired and shoot about 3000 pictures a year and maybe keep 1000.
I see the folder and subfolder structure fairly close to how Aperture did there set up of Projects and photos.

Have yet to se a real need for multiple catalogs as a hobbyist at least.

No limitation as to how many images can be managed by a single catalog.

Using keywords, collections and metadata for sorting/filtering it is unlimited how you can manage and get at your images as well. The catalog is never a road block.

The folder structure can pretty much be what ever you decide on and Lightroom stays happy, me, I let Lightroom create my folder structure by date taken, so Lightroom keeps it in top level folders by YEAR, then month and day subfolders - nice and neat.

Sorting/searching is done be keywords and metadata, not by browsing folder names. Searches are instantaneous.

Right! Sorry, I missed that one... I do use YYMMDD for mine, but it *is* important to add those leading zeros!

My main question is about updates:
(1)
Does Lightroom do updates or issue a new version every couple of years.
(2)
Am I at the mercy of a Cloud program with the $10.00 if I stop paying, IOW's I own the LR DVD and it is local to my computer, therefore the Catalog cannot be removed or held hostage.

I am an aperture user and have Photo Elements as a B/U.
I use PSE maybe, maybe once a year, I find Aperture covered just about ALL my needs.

Last year at this time I purchased Capture One Pro 8 and was going to use that software, BUT:
The Catalog is difficult to manage
The Forum and CS is poor at best
Their search is useless
It is designed for professionals and is not consumer friendly
Having said that , the process is as good as it gets if you take the time.
I did learn a big lesson from it (CO8), in that I need to have a K.I.S.S. program.

It is not the money, I want the ability to change ad keep my Catalog.

I hope I explained myself, otherwise please ask me additional questions,

Thanks,

Greg
My main question is about updates: br (1) br Does ... (show quote)

If you're a Blurb user (online photo book publisher) you may get an email offering a 20% discount. I did and pay $8.23/month for a year for LRCC and PSCC. It is charged to my credit card every month. I also bought LR6 just to have it. Another advantage is that the LRCC version has features that the stand alone version does not have. The same w/PSCC. I am po'ed at Apple for discontinuing support for Aperture. I guess they mostly want to sell hardware.
:D

I have the subscription and spend nearly ALL of my time in Lightroom. One of my New Year's resolutions is to get up to speed on Photoshop and make the subscription really worth it. For what it's worth, the subscription is good on 2 computers at any one time. Good luck!

I'm working my way through a Photoshop class. I'm working on what I can do that may be more than what Lightroom does for me. Yesterday's lessons were on "Filter > Render > Lighting Effects" and "Filter > Blur Gallery > Iris Blur"

I was truly amazed to see them work! For practice I used of crappy picture of my DW's revered dog. It came out well enough that I might hang it on a wall in her office.

The only problem I have with a large catalog is that on my old slow computer it takes a couple minutes to do a catalog backup, and it impacts the performance of the computer. Also, searches can take a bit of time (it's still only seconds, and I've gotten used to the computer doing things instantly).

I've got to update my computer.

All my images go into Lightroom. About 10% of them are passed on to Photoshop, then back to Lightroom. The two programs talk to each other, so that's really easy. This is one of the strengths of the "photography package".

I did use Photoshop before I got into CC, but I'm using it more now.

BTW, PS is useful for things other than photography. It has a lot of capability with text, so I make signs for my business and for some of the organizations I volunteer for. You can combine the text with images and really make some nice posters.

You can also have a lot of fun with it.
