Thank you phal84 for the visit and comments. Welcome to UHH. What a wonderful suggestion you have made. You are so right about the all the local memorials around the country. Given the number of photographers here on the forum we could get a collection from across the country. We have a memorial wall here in Mount Airy and one of the high schools built a memorial as well. I think I will go out and capture those. Back in September I photographed a memorial in Hillsville, VA that I did not really do anything with. I can pull those images back up and process them for a local grouping of memorials. We need to remember those who have fought to ensure the freedoms we all enjoy.

Strange that you should mention the Mount Airy memorial -
we were just up that way to High Point, NC to visit our son and we drove around to sight see including Mount Airy and stopped by the memorial downtown; I've attached several photos of such -

Yesterday I took a detour from my drive home and spent some time at the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. This memorial is a powerful reminder of the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of so many young lives involved in the landing of the Allied forces at Normandy on 6 June 1944. The memorial has been located in Bedford, VA because the town had the largest per capita loss of young men in the landing. A total of 20 of the rural town's young men met their death on the beaches of Normandy that day. Please enjoy this series of images from the memorial.

Unfortunately the water had all been drained from the beach landing area so the impact of the statues may not be quite the same but they do still maintain a great deal of impact.

Thank you merry for stopping in for a look. You are so right about how much we owe the young men who gave their lives on the beaches of Normandy that day so long ago now. We owe an incredible debt to all the young men and women who have served over the the years and those who still do today to keep us free and safe.

Alex Kershaw wrote The Bedford Boys, which explains why this memorial is placed in Bedford, Virginia, between Lynchburg and Roanoke, about a quarter mile off route 460. The National D Day Memorial is, of course, in New Orleans where the Higgins boats were developed and built, one of which is represented at the beach scene and is heart breaking. Great post and very nice photography.

Thank you lightandshadowjourney for your visit and informative comments. I was not aware there was another D Day Memorial. I will have to get to New Orleans at some point to see and shoot that one as well. I am glad you enjoyed this post.
