Lexar. Enjoy. The D7100 is a great camera. See if you can pick up a refurb 28-300mm lens. You may never take it off your camera. I used that lens and a Tamron 10-24mm for my wide angle.

I will definitely consider that. I’ll need a good zoom. But I didn’t get a “kit” because I knew I wouldn’t be happy with the 18-55 and 55-200 (or 300). I was looking at the 24-120, for the constant aperture, and, later on, the new 200-500. It would be great to get the 80-200 2.8. But that’s for later.

FWIW - I used a PNY 64 GB card in my D7100... VERY fast... and tons of space for raws, I could shoot for days and not fill up the card, HOWEVER, after unloading it one day it ceased to work - nothing lost, but would no longer work in camera, would not recognize in camera or in computer - the only effort that worked was throwing it out ;)

Now I shoot a pair of 32 GB cards in my 7100, I set the camera to shoot raw with a backup going to the second slot. Quite fast still and now at least I am making use of both slots/cards ;)

I do not reformat the cards until after transferring images to Lightroom and I am sure they made the transfer ;)

I cannot figure out why you would throw away ANYTHING that has a Lifetime Warranty, unless you bought it used where the warranty will not transfer, or from Ebay where it was most likely counterfeit.

I’ll look for them. Thank you. Should the “big” cards be avoided or what? Better two 16s, than one 32, or two 32s rather than one 64?

I usually use 32 GB in my 7DII and 6D, I do have a bunch of older 8s & 16s and one 64 for my wife's camcorder. She has a whole folder of 8s, 16s and 32s for Special Olympic weekends. I carry one extra set of 32s with each of my cameras. In the case of the 7DII I use the second slot for overflow so with the backup set that gives me 4000+ worth of card space. If 4000+ images in RAW won't do it for a full day I am in trouble. At the end of each day I import the day's pictures to LR so when I am out I can reformat and use the card.

My partner had a PNY card break in his Pentax. He even still had the receipt and they would NOT do anything about it. Been a couple of years we're still sour about PNY because of it. We both use 32G Sandisk Extreme cards with no problems.

No manufacturer will warranty physical damage, that demonstrates abuse. A card "breaking" in a camera? Kind of hard to know exactly WHAT happened there. "Failure" of the card is covered under their Lifetime Warranty.

It was not abuse, MT. My s/o is very careful with his equipment. It cracked inside the camera. He was able to retrieve it (he does HO railroad modeling and has the necessary tools) but PNY would not even replace the card. It was still under warranty and he had the receipt. We will never buy a PNY product again.

You are of course correct... I was not thinking or worrying about a warranty at the time - I should have been !

I think I did get it off EBAY, but if I recall it had the packaging and paperwork of a real live PNY card - definitely my bad ;)

To the OP: sandisk and make sure it says 95mb- get the best.

MT: I once purchased a sandisk off of eBay from a legit seller that needed to be replaced and sandisk replaced it for me.

Not a problem when its a genuine card. One report a couple of years ago estimates that 66% of all memory cards sold on Ebay were counterfeit. I have no idea as to the accuracy of that particular estimate, but I do know by experience that there are a LOT of counterfeit memory cards being sold there as well as on Amazon. I documented counterfeit Lexar Professional cards from Amazon once, surprised Lexar to see them out there and they were pulled by Amazon almost immediately after Lexar notified them of the counterfeits.

I recently went from a 35MB/sec older 64GB Sony Class 10 card to a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec when I got a D7200. The older card would buffer after about 20 high quality JPEG shots, I can crank out about 100 images now before it begins to slow down. Big difference. The card was about $50 at Amazon. Well worth it if you do wildlife or other action photography. I use the older, slower cards in the second slot as overflow in case Slot 1 fills up. Good luck!

Have fun with your new camera.I am a San Disk Extreme fan.
This comparison test is performed using a detailed test scene with controlled lighting. The D7200 is set to manual mode and secured on a tripod for the duration of the test. Focus is set manually using Live View at maximum magnification. A remote release with timer provides 30 second intervals for continuous shooting tests. Write speed is calculated by dividing the total bytes written to each card divided by the write time. The card access light is used to determine write time; a video of each test is reviewed and provides accuracy within a few hundredths of a second. Write speed is measured in MB/s (1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes). The write speed results are for RAW image format (RAW+JPEG and JPEG modes have lower write speed).

Congrats!!! You will love the camera. I got it one year ago and paid twice what you did. The buffer size is the biggest problem with the D7100 so if you are going to burst shoot, get the fastest write card out there. I bought the Sanyo Extreme Pro and have been very happy with it. I had another older SD "high speed card" and compared the two shooting RAW at 6 fps. After about 3-4 shots at 6 fps, they both started lagging but the Sanyo extreme Pro was much better than the older Promaster card.
The IQ of the D7100 is superb (I don't have a FF to compare it with but maybe I will one day when I have another GAS attack!!). have fun with it!!
