I am looking to purchase my husband a camera that is on an e-bay site. I've never bought anything from e-bay and am a little hesitant. The seller has a 99.9% good review. What I am looking to purchase is a Nikon 3200 with 3 lenses and a bunch of other stuff for 369.99. Does this sound legit?

3rd ask condition of lens for scratches,dents,
4th number of clicks on camera and ask any scrathes or dents

ebay is on the buyers side, something new, if items arent what he listed you can get your money back

make sure theres insurance on it

I personally avoid purchasing from foreign vendors (particularly Asian) because of possible import duties (can be as high as 8 to 10%). Having said that I have purchased repeatedly, and almost always previously used equipment, without difficulty. Ebay has a great buyer protection plan which I used once to obtain a refund on a faulty product from an individual seller who refused returns. Excellent feedback is really important. Ask questions such as "does it function perfectly, any blemishes" etc.

if you buy from ebay you do not really know who is selling the c amera. you don't have anyone to talk to if you have questions, and there is no warranty. Unless the seller is an authorized Nikon dealer the warranty only applies to the original owner. My suggestion is shop at KEH.COM largest used camera gear dealer in the world. excellent reputation. since they also do repairs they warranty the items they sell for 6months at no charge.Best of all their prices are better then ebay. the items are cleaned and checked to ensure they work. They did have a ebay store as well as their website. If the Nikon you found is coming from asia, you might wind up with a non English manual. not to mention a battery charger designed for Asian voltage instead of here.

Thanks guys, sorta followed gut feelings and ya all's advice. I bought him one at Best Buy.. He is tickled pink... Thanks for all the advice. I think someone was watching over me because I ran into one problem after another signing into e-bay and then same thin in PayPal. So I took the hint along with you guys advice and bought bought locally

I checked that camera on Ebay for you. The issue is if you buy that camera outfit, it is a gray market camera. What that means it is not warranted by Nikon even though it is a New Camera.

I have bought items off Ebay before with only two problems. One item that I bought for $300 (car part) never arrived but I was reimbursed by Ebay. The other item was a $10 screen protector that never arrived from overseas and I didn't bother to contact Ebay on this item.

One cause of concern is the price. A Nikon D3200 with two lenses (18-55 and 55-200) is $496.95 at B&H Photo. With three lenses in the package, I'm not sure if you are getting a new camera. If you have a maximum price, you may want to try used/refurbished cameras at B&H, KEH, Cameta, etc.

I've bought about 600 items on eBay and have only had problems with 3, 2 of which were resolved; 1 was a small dollar amount which was not worth pursuing. If you're buying any kind of goods, ask all the questions you can think of, first, and keep a copy of all the replies. If they won't answer all your questions I would walk. If they state "no returns" I'd walk, particularly on used gear. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably isn't true. If it doesn't have a valid USA warranty, I wouldn't buy unless they offer their own warranty and you are convinced it is legit. If it is a grey market item, you may not be able to get the USA importer to honor the warranty.

One thing to keep in mind with eBay is that many of the used camera sellers aren't strictly in the camera business. Most sell a variety of products for other people and really may not know anything about what they are selling so they likely won't be able to tell you anything about what you want to buy.

Frankly, on new camera gear I've almost always found a better deal from Adorama or BH, both of which are extremely reputable operations. I'd rather deal with an outfit which you know is likely to be in business next week and will stand behind their products. Most eBay sellers are probably pretty honest, but how do you determine which ones?
