This fellow crashed into my kitchen window and fell on to my deck. I held him in my hand and, when I put him back down, he just fluttered as he tried and tried to unsuccessfully stand.
He either flew off, which I doubt, or he fluttered away on the ground and I couldn't find him again.
I had one like that many years ago. He flew into a storm door and was motionless. I put it in my car and was on my way to the vets when it "came alive," literally.
It started hopping around on the dashboard, then started flying around. Luckily, I was able to pull over and open a window and off it went.
I hope your bird was as fortunate.

Let's hope he made it. That bird is probably either a N California Quail or a Gambel's Quail.

Usually they just knock themselves out. Leave them be and they will be ok. Once in awhile one will die.

I'm not in to birds, but I think you're right...it's a Quail!

I just don't think he made it. His side leg looked paralyzed.
Pretty sure it' a California quail. Such a pretty bird! Love the head shot. IF the bird doesn't break its neck when hitting a window, it will usually just knock itself out. After a while, it recovers and becomes frantic if confined. We've taken an Anna's hummer and a Western tanager in a shoe box back to the San Gabriel mountain foothills after they knocked themselves out against a window, opened the shoe box and both seemed to stop a moment, say thank you to us, and then fly off, but not until they'd had some time to recover. If we'd just left them alone, the cat would have had a little snack!

Sorry to say, but this guy couldn't stand or right himself. He just fluttered in a circle, on his side, as he tried to stand up. I do believe he was paralyzed.
What a pity! Windows pose a real threat to birds. One with that size body would hit pretty hard, and head first, would cause brain damage, probably. So sorry!
