With the hot and wet weather all summer the wild bananas behind my house have been growing like crazy! My son cut this bunch yesterday(temps are still in the upper 80's).

Yummm. Fresh-picked is so much better than store-bought!

Great shot; I had no idea that they would just grow in the wild, although I did see some growing in a Keys park. When you pick them green do the just ripen naturally? I have heard that the grocery stores apply a special gas to begin the ripening process. Onetime we purchases a set of five or so that were really green and they refused to ripen, so I just assumed that the gas had not been applied. I have also read that they should not be placed in a crisper where other vegetables are ripening, unless in a sealed bag, as that will speed up the ripening process.

These were actually plantains, which have to be cooked before eating because they are very bitter. I learned that from my daughter in law who is a Latina and she cooked them up for us and they were just delicious.
