I am impressed with Sony digital zoom and image stabilization

I'm a new member to UHH, but thought I would share these images from about 2 years ago. They demonstrate what I think is quite an extensive zoom and image stabilization capability. The pics were taken with my Sony SLT A-57 camera and the 18-250 zoom lens. The first photo is full wide angle while the second is from the same spot with full optical zoom and with the digital zoom maximized at 2.0. The 35 mm equivalents would be 27 mm and 375 mm. Both images were taken hand held. And yes, the girl is in both photos.
Edit: with digital zoom the 375 becomes 750 mm.

I changed from Nikon to Sony and can't believe the difference, I rarely take the tripod out with me any more, your pics show just how good Sony is hand held :)
The main thing I found with Sony it that the menus are so much easier to understand and they keep the format the same in their new cams so when you upgrade it is like you have it already love it :)

Nice photos, John. Is that Sagres (though I might have misremembered which city was which since my 1994 visit to Portugal,) and/or is that the point furthest West for the entire continent of Europe? If so, you had a much different vantage point than I did, which was from its Southern aspect. Who's the girl? 8-)

Almost correct it is the Cascades Resort in Lagos. Sagres is a bit further west.

No idea. A tourist from the resort? A local? For me she just added serenity to the landscape.

Thanks for the compliments. I went Sony because it allowed me to use my Minolta lenses (the plan), although I hardly ever use them (the reality). They are all in my camera bag (50 prime; 28-85; 75-300), so I get a good workout slugging them around, but I find the Sony 18-250 handles just about all situations for me.

Agreed!! Ditched my Nikons and only use the A6000. Mirrorless, light, and fast focus. Love it. Will never go back to Nikon.

Thanks, Raymond. I don't often use the extra reach of the digital zoom because I forget I have it. But it does come in handy the odd time, and it does a fine job, in my opinion.

I wish my lenses could pick up the detail that is really worth seeing. Sigh.

Well, all I can say is that ALL your lenses need to be working, starting with the eyes. I'll admit that I saw her with my "normal" eyesight zoom, which is about 50 mm equivalent on a FF, so she was not as hard to see as presented in the wide angle shot. But for sure, you have to keep your eyes open for such hidden treasures.
