I have the Pro-100 and use HP papers that I had to use with my previous HP photo printer. It does really well with the 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10. I haven't worked up to trying the 13x19 Canon papers yet, but soon will.

Try a Canon 13 x 19 digital art paper variety pack. It works great for me.
The 13 x 19 will cost you about a buck any where.
Canon is great photo paper but I been using Red River Paper for over a year and I love it. I use over 1000 sheets a year.
I'm wanting to try RRP's 13 x 19 Photo Metallic Inkjet Papers ( http://www.redrivercatalog.com/browse/index.htm ) I'v used a lot of 8.5 x 11 in my photo business and what it looks like. We can tell you whats good but you have to try it and see what you like. 5 years ago I started buying printers and photo paper on ebay and still do. I buy photo paper Canon, HP, and Epson in that order. I order RRP on line.
Heres one I just got in and makes nice prints.

You should consider sidelining your other brand paper for a while.

Use the Canon paper that matches the paper profiles that comes with the printer and work on your printing skills.

If you want to try a third party paper, find one that offers a paper profile that works with your printer. It will save you ink, paper and time.

Red River is a good start.

Canon makes quality paper, but they all have a magenta cast that I simply do not like invading every print.
Also consider a second set of ink, that printer might come with only starter cartridges.

I always keep two sets of ink (Epson) on hand and can replace a cartridge in two days.

For price, Canon has their own paper and ink sales site. Paper can show up with huge discounts. Last week you got two packs for free if you bought just one pack of 13x19. 3 packs for the price of 1 is not bad. I think paper has a long shelf life so I stocked up!

I stocked up last year on the Canon buy one get two free. Wait and see if they offer that again this year. If I am correct, last years offer occurred in the late fall or close to Christmas.

I picked up a new Pixma Pro-100 bundle from Craigslist NIB with 13x19" paper and ink bundle and receipt for warranty purposes for $125. I'm pleased with that. I don't have to spend $379 and wait for the rebate.

Questions: what paper do you recommend for portraits? I'm not a fan of glossy because of fingerprints & glare.

What's a good 4x6 size for family pictures, prefer semi-gloss?

I also would like to print B&W images of old trains, coal mines, historical photos. For this I think I want to go with matte but want rich blacks if possible.

Finally I have quite a few boxes of HP paper left over from my HP Pro B8190 which was a pigment printer. Is this useless with this printer?

I also have a box or 2 of Epson matte paper. Can I use it?

I see almost all paper is 8.5x11. Meaning I'd have to cut it down for 8x10's. Do paper mfgs make straight 8x10?

If you can recommend any 3rd party paper, I'm all ears or eyes. Thanks in advance, Dave

Look, Canon makes a great paper but they all have a magenta cast. If you are looking for more accurate color don't limit yourself to Canon. Try Ilford.

I buy my paper from Amazon, they have all the standard sizes - 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 etc. At first you might want to stick to Canon papers since your printer is profiled for Canon papers for best color fidelity. You can of course use any brand of photo paper, most should give you good results. I have heard a lot of good things about Red River papers but have never used them. Red River offers a lot of specialty and custom papers, can recommend their best papers for your printer and have downloadable paper profiles to optimize results for your printer and their papers.
