But it is quite difficult to save a scan with out a
computer attached. Make that impossible to save without.
This printer is wireless. Is that the problem? No cord to the puter.

All the wireless printer/scanners i have used scanned to the computer. If you don't have the printer/scanner software loaded into your computer it won't send the scan anyplace.

since you say "when the scanning is done, it shows me what was scanned" we can assume it is talking to the computer.

After I am done scanning the document appears on the screen showing me what I scanned. Then I can't find it anywhere.

has it ever saved a file of anything?
Just a thought - I may be completely off the mark, but:
some time ago I was making a scrapbook page and wanted to use some images of paper money as a backgound. So, I put a $5, $10, and $20 bill on the scanner plate, and as soon as the scanner was warmed up the light started moving. When it got to the money I got message on the computer screen that it is illegal to copy money, and that was that. There is a code printed on paper currency, that stops the scanner.
I wonder if there is something similar on a driver's license.
You'd probably need a magnifying glass to see it, but the code is made up from tiny yellow stars (at least on Canadian currency), if your driver's license has similar/same tiny yellow stars, they would be what's stopping the scanner.

This is probably not the reason it is not find-able but this reminds me that the Law says you may not make copies of driver's license or passports.....yet government agencies keep asking for copies !

I just tried scanning my DL and it came across just fine. My scanner also opened a program on my computer the minute I opened the scanner cover.

I have one even better than that. I tried to renew my CDL last week. I took in a copy of my birth certificate that i copied from my birth certificate that my parents got when I was born and the license office told me it was no good. The bloody idiots are making me get a $35.00 copy from the State records office.
[quote=will47]I am required to scan a copy of my drivers license to a stock photo agency. I put the license on the printer (HP6700) and tell it I want to scan a document.. Does a good job, however I can not find the scan and it gives me no option to send it to documents or whereever I want. I have checked documents, photo's etc. and no DL and no option to tell the scan where I want to put it. But when the scanning is done, it shows me what was scanned
I have not scanned in nearly 20 years. However, if I remember, there is something called a pre scan. It is a low resolution image used in acquisition with the purpose of setting certain parameters such as color balance and crop.
Is it possible that you saw the pre-scan and never completed the actual scan? If this is the case, the computer would not have established a file and a file name. It would not be that the file is lost, it just wasn't completed.
In this case, all you should have to do is rescan and make sure that you complete the task by seeing the image a second time (prescan and final scan). A scenario to save the image should result and you should be able to see to where it is saved.
for stuff like this I just take a photo with my phone... if you have Apple phone/mac you can use AirDrop to transfer the image to your Mac in seconds.

First of all, why do they need a copy of your driver's license? Are they hiring you as an employee? Do they just need a photo ID? If they must have the copy, there is a plethora of information I would redact.

I have scanned a DL before with no problem. That was on a Win 7 machine. Now Win 8.1 and the problems occur.

i feel as though i'm only getting part of the story:
Did you change computers?
Did you change operating systems?
Did the scanner ever work with the combination you have now?
Has the scanner/printer software been loaded?
Does the software support win 8?
Does the scanner work with a handwritten note on a piece of paper?
