which 50mm lens to buy

My main camera is a Nikon D800. I'm looking to add a 50mm lens to my kit and am really confused by all the possible Nikkor lenses. I want at leas and f1.4 but the f1.2 would be a possible choice if that is the best selection. I want the improved bokeh over my 24 - 70 and something I don't have to keep checking if the flash is casting a shadow from my lens onto the subject (sometimes I use the built in flash). The ability to hand hold with available light (w/out flash) is also desirable but I doubt the 1.2 over the 1.4 makes much of a difference there. Any strong opinions ?

Ollie, I puchased the 1.8 nikon 50. Wow what a lens, there is nothing I wouldn't shoot with this amazing lens. If you are intent on gaining a larger aperture, then consider going to a 35. But for the money, you can't beat a prime like the 1.8

I have the AF-S 50mm f/1.4G and have never been in a situation where I felt I needed that little bit more.
The f/1.2 runs about $250 more and is manual focus.
Unless your photography style requires razor thin DoF, I think you would be happy with the f/1.4.

I use the AF- 50 mm f/1.4D and always had great results. They say the 50 mm f/1.8D is just as good at half the price. Check out some internet reviews of all the lenses you are considering.

I've tried all the nikon 50's on a D800, owned all but the f1.2.
Found the f1.4 shut down to f2 was the best combination.
But:
Sold them all to buy the Zeiss 50/1.4 manual and like it even more.

I have the AF S 50/1.8G -- I am very pleased with it. I also have an ancient 55 /1.2 with AIS conversion. You can probably buy the 50 /1.8 and the old lens on Ebay for less than a faster current Nikon lens. I used the old lens, available light only at my Son's wedding reception and it did a great job.

So what I meant is that unless the OP is willing to focus manually the f/1.4 is the largest aperture possible.
As far as bokeh like I said I heard the 58mm has the best bokeh. So I think the OP has only 1 choice.

I have the 50mm f/1.2 also the 50mm f/1.8 auto focus. I rarely use the f/1.2 at full bore, but it gives a bright image in the viewfinder in dim conditions. Either of them will give crisp sharpness stopped down below f/2.8.

You can always rent one from a photography store to try before you buy. I've got a Nikkor 1.8 if you want to borrow it to see how narrow your DOF is.
