Lens Problem...

I have a Canon 24-105 1:4 L IS Lens. When attached to my 5DII camera I get a message that says err 1 and says communication error between camera and lens. My other lenses seem to work fine. I suspect that it is something in the IS portion of my lens. I does not matter if the IS switch is turned off or on I still get the same message. Anyone else ever experience this issue before? Guess I am not sure if the lens is repairable or not. Thank you for any suggestions!

Most common reason is dirty or damaged contacts on either lens or camera body. Clean both contact sets, carefully, and try again.
Did anything happen to the lens? dropped, got wet, taken off/put on with camera powered up, contacts touched (esp with dirty finger).

Hi Tobster
It maybe a dirty contact on 24-105 f4 lens or one of you lens contact is damage; but try cleaning with a soft cloth first dampen with a little isopropyl alcohol at 50% solution just clean the contacts only but if you use a Qtip be sure to look for an cotton threads left behind after cleaning and remove them.

I have this very lens It's one of the best walk around short zoom lens Canon makes in my opinion.

Well RichardSM....I tried your suggestion and I believe it did work...I will put it thru its paces tomorrow, but it did successfully take a few pictures tonight. Thank you so much for your help!

That should do it. I was about to suggest the same thing.

I've had just this same issue with this lens. Switching camera bodies makes no difference, even after repeated contact cleaning.

I'll try the alcohol solution, but I think it's going to get serviced.

I've seen this happen many times as a result of a damaged power diaphragm flexible connecting cable. These are available from a variety of sources but will require a technician to install as the lens will need to be completely disassembled to repair.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message or simply reply to this post.

Things are progressing nicely. I've moved from Denver to Colorado Springs so there is a new shipping address. Please refer to my website, listed below for the correct information.

Thanks RJ. Your offer is appreciated, but I do have a 3rd party e tended warranty from the vendor. It's really just a matter of my letting go of it for any period of time!

BTW, could you recommend a resource where I could get a better sense of what's inside this lens? It's all magic to me.

I have the same problem with my Tamron zoom on Canon Rebel t5i. But not always. T ried cleaning lens and camera contacts, did not help. If I remove and reinstall lens is ok, until some time later when it might happen again. Not oftem enough to get upset - yet.
Does not happen on other 2 lenses.

update on my lens issue. I had the the contacts cleaned, with no help. I sent the lens off to Canon and they replaced an internal electrical part (not sure the name) but it was 430 dollars. Half the price of a new lens, and it now works great. Canon was great to work with, with a rapid turn around, less than two weeks turn around time. Hope this helps with those of you with the same issue.

Basically you now have a "new" version of a great lens! The price on that lens (used) is climbing. Good luck with it and have fun.
