And I thought it was just me. Having used 2 different Kodak point and shoot cameras that had access to the SD Card on the side of the body I decided to make a modest upgrade to the Z990. I was appalled to find that the idiots at Kodak had put the card slot on the bottom of the camera forcing me to remove the camera from the tripod every time I wanted to see the pics. Kodak seems to think that their "EasyShare" program will solve all the ills of the world.
The other day I was browsing the camera dept. of the local Sam's Club. To my unhappy surprise I discovered that the Kodak idiots had been to Nikon and Cannon as well and that those cameras had the SD card slot on the bottom as well.
So the message is to all of the designers and engineers in the camera world: Learn to use a camera BEFORE you try to improve it. To all of the terrific members of UHH thanks for sharing your amazing talents and experiences. And....for letting me blow off a bit of steam.

This is the reason that I have gone to making sure I have my laptop and the USB cable with me for when I need to download the pics!! I never take the card out of the camera, and only have to open the door when the batteries need changing!!

Good point. However I am concerned about wearing out one of the cable ports. Don't laugh. I did that with an Olympus camera when I was taking lots of Quality Control pics. The port on the camera went.

In that case, maybe need an Eye-Fi card!! That does a WiFi connect and download when it gets close to your computer!!

Toolmaker, I am also an old 35mm guy and when I went to digital 2 yrs ago I went through extensive research on super zooms and settled on the sony HX1 and am still with it. Its max. mega pixels is 9 and the zoom is 20x they have come down in price a little since they are 3 years old now how ever IMO it takes betteer pictures whan any of the current supper zooms. Don't get caught up in the mega pixel race on these small sensor cameras. The HX1 has all the amenities of the current models of supper zooms. The HX1 has the Sony G lens, Sony's best. It can also be modified to use filters and tel. converters.
Click on my Flickr link below for examples.
Good luck,
Dan

I'm looking for suggestions for a new camera . I have it kinda narrowed down to nikon coolpix 510 or a canon sx 40 . I'm an old 35mm guy, and want a little more than the typical pocket sized point and shoot. i'm not to the stage where i would use a dslr e
fectively and several lenses would be hard to afford .

Had a chance to visit your site on Flicker?, and enjoyed your pictures . Really liked the pics of the old Shay engine. And the scenics were good too . Very much the kind of thing that interests me. If this is what a bridge Camera will do , I'm sure it will work for me. thanks for sharing this.

I truly think you will like the FZ150 - yes they are light - but packed with quality & all kinds of modes & settings. Too keep out of the digital zoon noise I have a 1.9 X that I tweek into the ver fisrts of digital zoom and it gives wonderful long long lens shots. the in camera IS set on (2) "Almost " takes away the need for a tripod on all but a few "comon sense" shots. Most of you will agree there are those that demand a tripod.

I just went through the same decision process, mostly for the same reasons you gave. My choice was the Panasonic FZ150. I tried the Canon SX40 which I thought would be my first choice, but I just couldn't stand the placement of the controls and the feel of the camera. I love the FZ150. Everything just feels right. All the cameras you mentioned, plus the FZ150 have similar features. The FZ150 will take very fast bursts and will shoot in RAW format if you want to give that a try. The zoom is a little bit less than the SX40, but I doubt if you will notice the difference.

Just got back from 10 days in Africa using it, and it did everything I wanted.

I'll have to go to the store and check that one out! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Pan. I'm very happy Best Buy has a no questions asked policy for 30 day returns. :-) Took it back on the 30th day.

Thank you dave for looking. I love my HX1 and am commited to it.
I do pro photo shoots for a very well known graphics design studio in Portland Or. and yes this is the camera I use. In the last year and a half I have paid for the camera many times over.
Had I purchased a DSLR and all the lenses needed to cover what my HX1 lens will do I would still be paying on them. But instead now it is money in my pocket.
Lots of luck, and what ever you choose, Enjoy!
Be for warned, there is a learning curve.
Cheers,
Dan

Very nice photo's Harvey.
I have heard good comments and reviews on the FZ150. The FZ150 would be another good choice. And it shoots raw if a person has use for it.
That shot of Mt. St. Hellens brings back old memories. My old stomping grounds were all around that mountain, befor, durring and after it blew. What a mess! presently living in the Olympic Peninsula at the base of Mt. Washington I hope to not see that happen here!!
Good shooting,
Dan
