Glad, you got replacements. However, all should note that you can purchase additional insurance from homeowners and renters policies at $1-2 for every $1000 of value without any deductible or prorating. This is different than the umbrella policies many insurers provide. With AAA it was simply to provide a receipt for each insured item. All payouts are at 100% of your cost. Did I have a claim? Yes, D810 and 24-70 f/4 went into the pacific. Check came within days. I am protected from accidents as well as theft. No I did not have to provide a police report either. All of my equipment is insured - tripods, filters, ballheads, luggage, meters, etc. If it could be stolen, it is insured.

This is cheap peace of mind....

Not trying to hijack the thread, but be advised that while many European cities suffer from pickpockets, Barca is the number one worst city on the continent when it comes to pickpockets. It is a very real and very well known problem. Barca makes Naples look like amateurs. (By the way, Madrid is almost as bad).

You can not leave your valuables unguarded for even a moment. In restaurants, wait staff will hand a woman her pocketbook if she tries to hang it on her chair while she dines. On Las Ramblas (one of the most popular tourist places), pickpockets are everywhere. I was buying a meal at a stall in La Boqueria (you will be there at some point) when the woman serving me suddenly reached down across the counter and began banging the hell out of someone with a broom. I thought she was swinging at me, but she pointed to my pants pocket and I saw that a travel map had been pulled half way out. I never felt a thing.

All of the hotels have written warnings in the room about the problem. Locals wear their backpacks on their chests (backwards) rather than their backs. Be advised, be aware and be careful. The problem is very real.

all of that notwithstanding, Barca is hands down on of my favorite cities on the planet. You will love it as long as you take every precaution about theft.

Thanks for the excellent (even if it is off topic) advice for travelers.

Very smart ... hard lessons you will avoid. Unfortunately many don't and many more believe that regular insurance covers it.

I have collected on the homeowners policy from Farmers on camera theft twice in the last 39 years. Never a problem because I keep all my receipts forever!

Please don't apologise. Very few native English speakers could write Spanish half as well as you write in English. We should be the ones to apologise.

Do they also slice through camera straps?

I’ve heard that they do that. They may come along on foot, or riding on a bike. Slice through the strap of the camera bag or a woman’s purse and off they go. You’ll never catch them. Keep a good grip on everything.

It depends. I’ve had my photo gear stolen twice. Once, my bag with the Nikon F, 35, 50 and 135 were stolen out of my condo. And about ten years later my FE2, 50, 105 and 300 were stolen out of my car (the backpack was in the trunk). Insurance paid “replacement value” both times (homeowner’s insurance covered).

What I’ve heard is better, especially if you have higher-end gear, is to get an add-on “rider” to your homeowner’s policy that specifically covers what you’ve got.

I also was a victim of theft in the Barcelona Airport, a tag team, one guy diverted my attention and the second guy stole my carryon bag in a matter of 10 seconds less. Our travel insurance made good on on my Canon DSLR, new jacket, etc... We were lucky because I took the time to report the theft to the airport police and got a police report. A police report is crucial in claiming a loss with travel insurance.
They wouldn't cover my new prescription sunglasses, but I was able to claim them with Visa, they paid as well

Today I have specific insurance for my camera gear from my State Farm agent.
