Good luck with your hunt for a new outfit. Remember, once you get started down the road with a particular brand with lenses and other it makes it damned expensive to do a 180 to something else. I'll put my plug in here. I shoot Sony and believe they're in it for the long-run. They have excellent equipment. They are kind of proud of their lenses however. Minolta stuff is good too!! Again, good luck and let us know which way you decide to swing, okay? :)

Not sure who you are directing this question to.

The flashes that Sony sells are controlled by i.r. light signals from the camera or camera mounted flash. They do not work well over long distances or from another room. There are third party flash options/additions that add radio but I'm not familiar with them. I own three model HVL-85AM flashes and two HVL-85AM, and one HVL-20AM that I use on my A900 to control all the others. They work well if they are all in the same room.
BTW, the self portrait on the left was taken using several of these flashes.

I joined to see if I could find information that would help me choose what camera system to buy. After we had a burglary where my old Olympus E410 and lenses and some smaller cameras and a video camera got stolen I have a big chunk of money to spend on cameras.
People I know who are really into photography say, what I have also read on this page, that Nikon and Canon are equally good, you normally just stay with what you have.
I don't necessary have to stay with anything, although I do have some old Olympus lenses.
In the stores the sales people were telling us a lot of good things about Sony and we were really impressed. Now I wonder if they have higher commissions from Sony or if the cameras are really that good. Maybe I haven't heard much about them just because people are stuck with their old Nikons and Canons.
What are your opinions? I looked at Sony A65 and A77. I have also looked at the Canon A60 D
What I wish to have, but may not be able to get in one camera is,
light camera, viewfinder, fast for taking sports pictures, good in low light too, easy UI. I also know that the lenses are really important.
I am just an amateur and I have found that some of the things I like, easy changing the settings are only on the heavier professional cameras.
To be honest I don't like the looks of all these new cameras, but I guess I will have to live with that. I looked at the new Olympus OM-D on the web. It looks like the old cameras.

Nikon, Canon, and Sony are the top dogs in the market currently. Sony makes the sensor for the Nikon D7000. All have a wide selection of available lenses that are incredible. There's certainly nothing wrong with Olympus or Pentax or any of the others but N, C, and S are the big dogs for definite reasons - proven quality and reliability.

Sony has image stabilization in the body so you don't have to buy image stabilization equipped lenses although you can also use image stabilization lenses on it too. Sony Alpha series bodies have the advantage of using Minolta auto-focus lenses seamlessly because they now own Minolta (since 2006) and most Sony lenses are made in the Minolta manufacturing plants.

I have the Sony Alpha 55 and it has been wonderful. If I were to go with another Sony it would be the Alpha 77. My other personal preference would be the Nikon 7000 based solely upon hundreds of incredible shots that I've seen that were done with it, friends who have other Nikon models and I like them, and Nikon's reputation. I've never owned a Canon dSLR but they are excellent as well. What you feel comfortable with is what you should get.

The Sony salesmen are not getting higher commissions, they're just telling you that Sony has some technological advantages in the marketplace right now with reasonable pricing. Don't be afraid to go in that direction if you like the cameras.

I shot Canon, and picked the brand for three top reasons:

1. a few of my friends shot Canon DSLRs and I would be able to pick their brians about menu features, lenses, etc as well as try out/borrow some of their gear.
2. I liked the way the Canon felt in my hand over the Nikon, just felt more natural to me.
3. I found a Canon 40D for sale with less than 1,000 clicks for $250.

My advice is go to a camera store with no real idea of which brand you want, just what you are going to be using it for and a budget. Talk to the people behind the counter and get them to give you a couple of recomendations that will suit your needs, hold each one and find the one that feels right in your hand.

I agree with you MWAC, go to camera stores and get a feel for what is out there and what you will be comfortable with. That's the only way I buy camera stuff. No point in spending a lot of money if you find the camera you are holding intimidating or it looks ugly.

In today's ultra-competitive market, many camera shops will rent you cameras and let you try a few. You may have to put down a reasonable non-refundable deposit to ensure that you don't try every camera they have and then buy online.

Two things to find out up front:

Are the sales reps on commission or quota? If so, be nice when you leave.
Will the sales reps represent the good and not-so-good aspects of all brands equally and fairly?
