As a Pirate and West Countryman I can only say: "AAARRGH!

Who is this Griper, or Gypo or Gypper you are talking about anyway?

Not a term I am familiar with...

Ahhhhhh... a slight corruption of the name of one George Gipp, made famous by the Ronald Reagan portrayal in the movie "Knute Rockne: All American".

Google the speech... ;)

The person who got me into SLRs swears by them but I got a Canon 6D because of its compactness instead of the larger 5D3. Carrying an extra battery or two is much easier than attaching a bulky grip.

I love the battery grip on my Pentax K3- but I have rather large hands that felt like they were swallowing the camera (without the grip). The weight doesn't bother me either, so I prefer to have one on my camera.

I also have the 6D with BG13 grip. It feels similar to my 60D that is also griped.

And once again battery or power has nothing to do with my decision of the grip.

Tried it but too heavy and made the camera cumbersome. Stowed it away.

Are any of you using a battery grip on your DSLR, and do you find that it improves your handling of the camera (I am not asking about its ability to increase number of pictures being taken before battery change)?

I have one for my D810 but I don't use it. Because I mostly shoot from a tripod using a shutter release and I mostly shoot landscape I don't find it too useful. I do like it when handholding and shooting portrait. Battery reserve is not an issue as I have never drained a battery and I carry extras just in case. I think it is merely a matter of personal choice and comfort.
