Photographic museum London and Bradford UK

quick search will give you museums that specialise in photography and cinema...Try emailing the photo's to them . they will tell you what it is and suggest an auction house that may tell you what its worth. There may be an auction house specialising in these things that the museum knows about.
Looks more like a magic lantern with a roll of slides rather than movie
It will be a talking piece if nowt else

Film stock in the "old" days was of nitrocellulose and became unstable with age. I'd keep it away from flammable things till I got the film piece out of it. Such film burns but does not explode. I wouldn't be afraid of it but just be cautious. This may NOT be the unstable stuff after all.

While cleaning out our Mom's house, we found this in a box in her basement. It seemed that she bought it at an auction several years ago. I know she wouldn't have bought it as a specific item, as she was not interested in photography, so I can only assume that it was in a box of "stuff" where there WAS something that she wanted and this just "came along for the ride".

Is it worth anything or should we just toss it?

Antique and junk.

Right! It looks similar to the "old" (1960's) one I have in the garage. Same format.

I hope someone here on this forum will be able to shed some light on this for you , if it were mine I most certainly would not toss it!! looks like there is a roll of film , I would carefully have a look at it .

Judging from what we see in the photo, my opinion is it's what we used to call "The Magic Lantern", which is a projector that used an actual lantern for illumination and used a strip-film to show successive 'slides'. Slides (next picture on the strip) were advanced by manually turning that huge red wheel. (Darn it, now I'm showing my age again:o)

You might consider contacting the George Eastman Museum (think Eastman Kodak) in Rochester, NY for their input. Send pictures and note any written info that is on it. They are the premier photography museum in the world. They might even be able to give you info on a museum that is closer to where you live so that if you donate it, you could visit it if you desire to do so. Or if you and they find mutual agreement, perhaps they would like it for their collection. If they do, they would take excellent care of it. Most definitely DONT junk it!

A useful feature in Google Images is the ability to enter your own photo of an item or location into their data base and conduct a search for the same or similar item.
