Nikon D-300
Anyone have any feedback or opinions on the Nikon D-300?
I am thinking about upgrading from my Nikon D-80. Also looking to by new or slightly used.
Might as well wait till the D400 comes out which should be soon, or go with the D7000, I have a d90 which was favorably compared to the D300 as much of the technology in the D300 was incorporated into the D90. The D7000 has been favorably reviewed and there are many in this forum who have one, wish I did. I do belong to a website called Nikonians, there is a membership fee involved though, but they have a forum for equipment sales, I've seen all makes and models of Nikon cameras for sale, including D300, d7000, right up to d3's, lenses and other accessories.
thanks, I was a member of the Nikonians but think I have lapsed.

I have both the D300 and D300S and use it mainly for nature photography. Both cameras meet all my needs expectations except for noise at ISO higher than 640. I like to have my speed set at 1/1600 and f-stop f-8 or greater, so unless light is perfect I need to use a higher ISO.
The rumors for the D400 started over a year ago, and it still hasn't appeared on the market yet.
The D7000 is a better consumer camera but it is not built as strong as the D300s ..... yes, the D7000 his more megapixals but how large will your pictures be ..... as for ISO ... yes it is nice to have available 25000 ISO but 6400 is sufficent in most situations .... also buying a used DSLR has potential problems ..... how will you determine the number of shutter actuations ... shutters wear out .... most 300s are used by professionals ... high number of shutter actuations ... it is expensive to replace a shutter .... the 300s body is about $1700 .... when the 400 comes out it probably cost close to or over $ 2000. ... also the D80 is a good camera ..... you might consider buying lenses with a 2.8 constant f stop
I have the D-300 and love it. Rumors are a D-400 is on the way but if you can get a good deal on the 300 you might want to do it. Have a 18-200 Nikkor lens and it makes the perfect package.
go for the D300s .... it has some more advanced features than the 300 ..... for example .... the 300s has 2 card storage slots .... one cf the other sd .... this allows you to shoot raw on one card and jpeg on the other .... also the 300s has video ....

I have a D300s and find it very complicated. I am over my head. Got it for the 2 card slots--fantastic feature--and will attend an all-day class on it, given by the Nikonians, in a few days. If you don't know this group you should: they are under both "nikonians.org" and "nikonian.org".

Carl, You may want to think about joining a camera club. That another good resource to learn how to use your camera. Arnold

I purchased a D300 to replace a D80 and was not disappointed. Size matters... The D300 is heavy. I suggest you try one out before purchasing. If you get one, I would recommend you buy a comfortable, padded shoulder strap. It makes a big difference. In addition, while the bright yellow "Nikon" on the strap is good for one's ego, it also spells "steal me".
A friend just bought the D7000 . I have checked it out. I prefer the control placement on the D300.
I'm still using the D80, and agree with a previous poster that you might be better served by investing in lenses, filters, etc.

I own a D-300 and D-3. The 300 is 3/4 frame and is an excellent camera. I use it mostly as a "Macro" unit along with the D-3 for 70x200 to 200x400 super telephoto. The D-300's clarity as a general all-around camera is unsurpassed in my opinion. I have used it and the D-3 in some of the most rugged situations weather wise on my Alaskan shoots and never a failure!!
I have both a D300 and a D300S. I really like my 300 and have used it for several (3-4) years. The other day I saw a 300 go used at a photo stores tent sale for $160. I really use my300S as a back up camera as I occasionally shoot a wedding.
Not the latest and greatest Nikon ever made but a real reliable working camera that can now be purchased really cheap. You will wonder why you took so long to switch when comparing it to a D80/90. I originally had one each of these models.
Buy one ! D300s ony better if you need video or M card flexibility. Get one with as low shutter acts as you can ! Miles better than D80 but more complicated I have both .
I pondered the D300s over the D7000..but when I went to see the camera in store..no way was I gong to carry that heavy camera around on my daily treks. I went with the D7000/ go look at both before you buy.
I have the D300 and absolutely love it :) I upgraded from the D70.
